The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to launch a new domestic tournament next year. The tournament is expected to be played in August, and its primary aim is to identify Pakistan’s team composition for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa

Former Pakistan cricketer Aaqib Javed, also PCB’s Director of High Performance, confirmed that the 50-overs competition will be staged before the start of Pakistan’s domestic first-class season.

Pakistan players to compete in four-team tournament for World Cup prep

PCB Director of High Performance Aaqib Javed has confirmed that the board will be organising a quadrangular 50-overs tournament in Pakistan in August 2027.

The primary aim of the tournament will be to help Pakistan selectors identify a core group of players for the subsequent 2027 World Cup in South Africa.

In an official media release, Javed said, “We have around 18 months until the 2027 World Cup, so this is the right time to begin our preparations. The selectors and coaches sat together and designed this four-team tournament. Four balanced sides will be selected, and all white-ball players will take part.”

The former Pakistan cricketer further stated that the selectors and coaches will also be responsible for determining each team’s playing XI based on specific roles for all individuals.

Aaqib Javed aiming for top four ranking for Pakistan

The four-team 50-overs tournament, set to be played by nearly every major or rising white-ball specialist from Pakistan, will be broadcast live for fans in the country.

Aaqib Javed believes that such a move will help selectors build the right player pool for the Pakistan cricket team.

He also added that Pakistan’s primary aim is to be ranked among the top four ODI sides in the world. The PCB director of high performance stated, “Pakistan's ODI team should be ranked among the top four in the world. Anything below that is unacceptable. We are determined to make significant progress in the rankings.”

Pakistan target improved World Cup performance in 2027

PCB’s latest 50-overs all-star domestic initiative indicates that Pakistan cricket is determined to put up a strong performance in next year’s 2027 Cricket World Cup.

It is worth noting that the ‘Men in Green’ have failed to qualify for the semifinals in each of the last three editions of the tournament.

Moreover, the Pakistan men’s team has also returned with underwhelming performances in recent T20 World Cups and is currently placed at the bottom of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) points table

Pakistan will be hoping the new tournament lays the foundation for a more settled ODI side ahead of the marquee event. The initiative could play a key role in shaping the squad for the 2027 World Cup.

Not long ago, the ICC confirmed tentative dates for the 2027 World Cup, set to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The tournament will likely be played between October 4 and November 21, i.e., just a couple of months after PCB’s proposed four-team 50-overs domestic competition.
