For the first semi-final of the ongoing marquee event ICC T20 World Cup 2026, New Zealand will compete with South Africa on March 4 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The SA vs NZ match will begin at 7:00 PM IST.

South Africa qualified for this knockout game after having an unbeaten Super 8 campaign in Group 1. They beat India, the West Indies and Zimbabwe comfortably and without breaking a sweat to earn their deserved spot.

New Zealand, on the other hand, had a hiccup against England. But they had beaten Sri Lanka comfortably after their first match against Pakistan was abandoned. So, with 3 points, the Kiwis edged past Pakistan in NRR to make it to the semis.

Both sides are in form, with strong players performing at the right stage. So, the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2026 will be a cracker of a contest. Let’s look at how New Zealand’s probable playing XI could shape up for this game.

Openers and top-order - Tim Seifert (WK), Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra

Tim Seifert has been in good form, scoring 216 runs, thus being New Zealand’s highest run scorer of the tournament. Finn Allen is expected to support him as an opener just like how he has done in this T20 World Cup.

At no. 3, the Kiwis will field Rachin Ravindra. His form has been below average so far. However, New Zealand are lacking reliable options to replace him at the moment. So, Ravindra is expected to continue.

Middle order and all-rounders - Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner 

To accelerate the innings, New Zealand will have big and quick hitters like Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell. Phillips showed good form in the last game against England. But the Kiwis would expect more from him.

Mark Chapman has been quiet and has failed to stand out. But the semi-final is the best possible platform for him to break the shackles. Mitchell Santner, the captain, is the most important piece of this lineup puzzle. 

He can bat and strike wickets at the right time. Though Santner had an off game against England, his talent cannot be ignored. If he fires both with the bat and ball, South Africa will be at a big advantage.

Bowlers - Cole McConchie, Matt Henry, Ish Sodhi, Lockie Ferguson

As for the bowling department, Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson will lead the pace attack. Both are highly experienced, and the conditions of Eden Gardens will suit them to an extent, especially in the first innings. 

Henry, who flew back home for the birth of his second child, is expected to return in time for this knockout clash.

As for spin, apart from Mitchell Santner, New Zealand will also rely on Ish Sodhi and Cole McConchie. The combination of off-break and leg-break will work wonders if used rightly.
