Rohit Sharma is set to become captain of the Mumbai Indians franchise for next year’s IPL 2027 season, as per reports. The report also indicates that the legendary opening batter is expected to be officially named as MI captain before retention window closes this month.
Hardik Pandya, who has served as Mumbai Indians skipper in the past three editions of the tournament, will reportedly be joining the Punjab Kings franchise instead.
IPL 2027 bracing for some dramatic changes with Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya
As reported by India Today journalist Rahul Rawat, the Mumbai Indians franchise is expected to re-appoint Rohit Sharma as team skipper for the IPL 2027 season next year. The announcement will likely be made official between November 16 and November 18 this month.
Additionally, the Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya trade is also expected to be finalized between the Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings franchises. The report states that the two franchises have already sent the documents to the BCCI.
It is worth noting that Rohit Sharma previously served as captain of the Mumbai Indians between IPL 2013 and IPL 2023 before he was replaced by Pandya as skipper for the 2024 edition. Since Pandya took over as captain, the Mumbai Indians franchise is yet to reach the final.
However, Sharma remains the joint-most successful skipper in IPL history for guiding Mumbai Indians to five title victories. If he indeed returns to the helm for IPL 2027, the move could mark a new chapter for the five-time champions, who will be eager to rediscover their title-winning form under the leadership that brought them unprecedented success.
Hardik Pandya to not join Punjab Kings as captain
While Hardik Pandya is reportedly on track to join the Punjab Kings franchise for the IPL 2027 season next year, the senior all-rounder will not serve as their captain. The report indicates that KKR’s champion skipper Shreyas Iyer will continue to remain Punjab Kings’ captain next season.
Additionally, Riyan Parag will also remain as captain of the Rajasthan Royals, even though recent reports had indicated that the talented all-rounder will likely be demoted from his role.
