MS Dhoni Pleaded To Join Indian Team To Replace Gautam Gambhir

Former India fast bowler S. Sreesanth is making waves on the internet after his explosive interview has gone viral. Among various suggestions, he also backed the the idea of bringing MS Dhoni as Team India's mentor.

Sreesanth has openly criticised India's head coach Gautam Gambhir, slamming him for being against the senior-most batters, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Under the Gambhir regime, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from the Test format, rather surprisingly. As the duo only plays a single format, there is also a virtual sword hanging over their selections in the ODI format.

Sreesanth backs mentor MS Dhoni over Gautam Gambhir

In his explosive interview with The Lallantop, S. Sreesanth single-handedly took on the Indian head coach, Gautam Gambhir, who was hired by the BCCI after a successful stint as mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2024.

However, the former Indian pacer, who played 90 matches for India, doesn't find Gambhir's coaching style adequate for the current Indian side.

Moreover, he has advocated replacing the current head coach with former India captain and mentor MS Dhoni, who has a brother-like relationship with all the leading men in the Indian team.

"Change the coach, friend. India needs a mentor, not a coach," S. Sreesanth said on Lallantop's Guest in the Newsroom.

"You have to be a brother first. You can't just laugh when you win and get angry when you lose. You've done well for the country, that's great. That doesn't mean others aren't trying. Have a mentor over a coach," he added. "Team India needs a mentor like Dhoni".

Sreesanth demands for SKY, Samson's credit for T20WC win

Sreesanth also stated that Captain Suryakumar Yadav and Player of the Tournament Sanju Samson didn’t receive sufficient credit for India's T20 World Cup 2026 victory; instead, Gautam Gambhir stole the show, according to the former fast bowler.

"When the team won the World Cup, all the credit went to Gambhir. But if Sanju Samson hadn't been there, Suryakumar Yadav hadn't captained, and the bowling changes hadn't been made at the right time, would we have won the match?" Sreesanth said.

Ashish Nehra backed over Gambhir by Sreesanth

Furthermore, he backed Ashish Nehra's coaching style, which has led the Gujarat Titans to three of the four successful IPL seasons. Under Nehra, GT has won silverware and reached the IPL 2026 final.

"Was the coach making decisions on the field? It's fine if we have a coach like Ashish Nehra, who remains involved," he added.

Topsy-turvy India under Gautam Gambhir

Under Gautam Gambhir’s leadership, Team India has played two ICC events and won both of them without breaking a single sweat. However, his track record in bilateral series has been questionable.

Additionally, India have been whitewashed twice in home Test series, against New Zealand and South Africa, both under Gambhir’s coaching. The Indian side is going through a massive transition with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s exit, although the two stars are active when the Blackcaps whitewashed India in 2024.

Having said that, the Gautam Gambhir-Shubman Gill combo should be credited for the Test tour of England last year, where India drew the series 2-2.
