In an important move ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, Australia have appointed Travis Head as captain for the opening T20I match against Pakistan. The first game of the three-match T20I series will be played on Thursday in Lahore.

Notably, regular captain Mitchell Marsh has been rested for this match, giving Travis Head the opportunity to lead the side.

This decision comes as Australia carefully manage player workload before the major global tournament. As vice-captain, Travis Head will step in as the stand-in skipper for the first T20 International of the series.

Mitchell Marsh rested after a heavy workload

Initially, Mitchell Marsh was expected to captain the team against Pakistan. However, after a long and demanding Big Bash League (BBL 2025-26) season, the Australian team management decided to give him a break. Marsh recently played the entire BBL season for the Perth Scorchers, which took a toll on his body.

According to reports from CODE Sports, Marsh and wicketkeeper Josh Inglis arrived in the subcontinent only on Wednesday. Both players had featured in the BBL final on Sunday, where the Perth Scorchers defeated the Sydney Sixers by six wickets at Perth Stadium to win their sixth BBL title.

Mitchell Marsh’s BBL performance

During the BBL season, Mitchell Marsh scored 360 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 132.35. While he was not at his very best throughout the tournament, he played an important role in guiding the Scorchers to the top of the points table and eventually to the championship under Ashton Turner’s leadership.

However, Marsh has struggled with injuries in the past and is being protected ahead of the T20 World Cup. The 34-year-old has also stopped bowling regularly and is expected to play in the World Cup mainly as a specialist opening batter. Therefore, resting him for the first T20I against Pakistan is seen as a precautionary move.

Travis Head’s limited captaincy experience

Notably, Travis Head has some experience leading Australia in the shortest format, although it is limited. Travis Head has captained Australia in just one T20I before, which was against England in 2024. In that match, he scored 31 runs, but Australia lost, giving him a 0–1 record as T20I captain.

Meanwhile, Australia have several opening options for the series, including Mitchell Owen, Cameron Green, and Matt Short. These players are also expected to be part of Australia’s plans for the upcoming ICC tournament in India.

It is also important to note that senior players Pat Cummins, Tim David, and Josh Hazlewood have been named in the T20 World Cup squad; however, they have been excluded from the team for the Pakistan series.

Cummins is rehabilitating a back injury, with his availability for the World Cup dependent on the outcome of a back scan scheduled later this month. Meanwhile, Hazlewood and David are likewise returning from hamstring injuries.

Meanwhile, Nathan Ellis and Glenn Maxwell have also been rested for this T20I series and will join the T20 World Cup squad later.

All three matches of Australia’s Pakistan tour will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The matches are scheduled for January 29, January 31, and February 1.
