South Africa women squad announced [Source: AFP]
Cricket South Africa (CSA) has assembled a strong South Africa squad for the upcoming 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. As reported earlier, legendary fast bowler Shabnim Ismail has revered her retirement and is set to make a return to the national side after a gap of over three years.
Ismail previously announced her retirement from international cricket back in mid-2023, after playing her ‘last’ match in February that year.
Marizanne Kapp returns, Laura Wolvaardt to lead
Legendary South Africa all-rounder Marizanne Kapp has been included in the national squad for the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. A couple of months ago, Kapp was ruled out of the ODI series against Pakistan, and also did not play South Africa’s home series against Team India as she was rested after feeling discomfort during a T20I in Benoni.

With Kapp returning to the side, she will now be joined by fellow seasoned pro Shabnim Ismail after the latter reversed her retirement. Prolific top-order batter Laura Wolvaardt will continue to lead the side and she will be accompanied by other top-performing players like Tazmin Brits, Nadine de Klerk, Chloé Tryon, Suné Luus and others.
CSA entrusts U19 graduates with T20 World Cup 2026
Apart from adding a bunch of senior and experienced cricketers, CSA has also included a couple of Under-19 South African graduates. Explosive middle-order batter and former U19 captain Kayla Reyneke was included in the side, alongside her 2025 junior World Cup teammate Karabo Meso.
Here is a look at the entire South Africa Women side for the upcoming showpiece event in England.

Why did Shabnim Ismail reverse her retirement
Shabnim Ismail reversed her retirement at the behest of Cricket South Africa director of cricket Enoch Nkwe and Proteas head coach Mandla Mashimbyi. Following their discussion, the two parties recently reached an agreement.
Not long ago, Mashimbyi had implied that the CSA has failed to find an ideal replacement for the legendary fast bowler. The coach said “We’d like to have some pace, but there is nothing on offer at the moment.”
South Africa placed in Group A of T20 World Cup 2026
As per the ICC schedule, the South Africa Women’s team is placed in Group A of the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup alongside Australia, India, Bangladesh, Netherlands and Pakistan.
Their first match of the tournament will be played against Australia Women on Sunday, June 13 at the Old Trafford in Manchester.
It is worth noting that the Proteas Women have reached the final of the last two T20 World Cup events in 2023 and 2024, losing to Australia and New Zealand in the final.
