Kevin Pietersen has issued a clarification over his newfound role with the England cricket team. Mere days before taking flight for Australia, the former England captain took to his social media account and explained that he is not a “full-time employee” for the national team.
It is worth noting that just a few weeks ago, Pietersen was appointed as the specialist mentor of the England white-ball cricket teams by the ECB.
Kevin Pietersen says he will not be with England team “all the time”
Taking to X on Saturday, October 31, Kevin Pietersen clarified his position in the current England coaching setup. Acknowledging his consulting role for England’s white-ball teams, the former cricketer explained that he will not be available for every match they play until next year’s 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
He posted, “Just need to clear something up once and for all. I am a consultant to the England Cricket Team. I am not a full time employee. So I WILL NOT be with the white ball team all the time and for EVERY game they play over the next 12 months.”
Pietersen also confirmed that he will be travelling with the England team to Australia for their upcoming three-match ODI and five-match T20I series against the hosts.
The 46-year-old added, “Excited to travel to Aus for a few weeks to be with the team on Monday! Hope that clears things up once and for all!”
Kevin Pietersen appointed by ECB to oversee England till 2027 World Cup
Back in September, the ECB named Kevin Pietersen as England’s new Specialist Mentor for the white-ball teams. He joined the England coaching staff led by head coach Brendon McCullum and other members like Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Sarah Taylor.
While his primary task was to guide the England ODI team on their road towards the 2026 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup next year, the former skipper did not travel to Pakistan this month for England’s ODI tri-series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
England’s upcoming eight-match white-ball tour of Australia next month will mark his first assignment since getting appointed as team mentor. As per the schedule, the England cricket team will take on Australia in three ODIs and five T20I matches between November 13 and December 2.
