Wiaan Mulder brought up his fourth Test century through the course of his Day 4 effort against Australia in Cape Town. Batting at number seven, the cricketer scored 115 runs off 221 balls with 10 boundaries and four huge sixes.

Mulder composed a major share of his runs while batting alongside fellow centurion Ryan Rickelton, who charted his own Test ton as South Africa’s lead swelled to 287 runs by stumps on Day 4.

Wiaan Mulder scales rare batting milestones for South Africa

Wiaan Mulder, batting at number seven, arrived to the crease at 181-5 in the 67th over of the second South Africa innings on Day 4 of their series-deciding third Test against Australia at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town.

The innings marked his fourth Test century, and helped South Africa regain control of the match as his 154-run sixth-wicket partnership with Ryan Rickelton set up a huge target for the visitors.

With his century, Mulder also became the first South Africa cricketer in history to score a Test century against Australia in Cape Town while batting at number seven or lower position.

He is also the first South Africa batter to score a Test ton at home against Australia while batting at number seven or lower since the year 2014. Former cricketer JP Duminy was the previous batter to score a century in the position with his 123-run knock against the visitors over 12 years ago in Gqeberha.

Wiaan Mulder holds the best conversion rate in Test history

Wiaan Mulder brought up his fourth Test century from 204 balls with a double off Nathan Lyon in the 132nd over of the South Africa innings on Day 4. The innings also marked his maiden century on South African soil.

Notably, Mulder now has an 80 percent rate of converting his 50s into 100s, which is currently the highest among all batters with four or more Test centuries to their names.

Overall, the 28-year-old has registered four tons and one fifty in his Test career so far, averaging 36 in the format after playing 27 Tests.

With South Africa folding up for 387 late on Day 4 shortly after his dismissal at 115 by Pat Cummins, Australia now require to chase 288 runs to win the series on Day 5.
