Australia need 287 to beat South Africa in 3rd Test [Source: AFP]
South Africa have roared back in the third Test as Australia needs 287 runs to win the third Test in Cape Town and seal the 3-match series. Momentum swung in South Africa’s favour on Day 4 as Wiaan Mulder, and Ryan Rickelton scored stunning centuries to put the visitors on the back foot.
Against a rampant South African attack, Australia have a mountain to climb as they need to chase down a tricky total at Newlands on Saturday. Ahead of a riveting Day 5, we take a look at the highest successful Test run-chases at this venue and whether the Aussies still hold a chance.
Highest successful run-chases in Tests at Newlands, Cape Town
Newlands, Cape Town has witnessed some extraordinary run-chases in red-ball cricket, and here is a list of them all:
It was Australia, who have recorded the highest successful run-chase at Newlands, Cape Town. The Kangaroos chased a mammoth 331 against the hosts, way back in 2002. Ricky Ponting scored a stunning hundred, and Matthew Hayden scored 96 as the visitors stunned South Africa.
South Africa's 236/2 against Australia in November 2011 is the second-highest successful chase at Newlands. Meanwhile, the third, fourth, and fifth highest chases at Cape Town also belong to the Proteas.
Can Australia chase down 287?
If Australia do manage to chase 287, it would be the second-highest run-chase in Tests at Newlands, Cape Town. However, the task looks tricky as the wicket has been two-paced, and run-scoring might not be easy.
The Australian batting has not looked the best in the ongoing series, and with Marnus Labuschagne out of form, the team would hope the other batters can step up on the big occasion.
Interestingly, Australia’s highest successful Test run-chase has been 404, and their second-best chase has been 369/6. The Kangaroos have plenty of run chases above the 300-run mark in Tests, and they have to produce a batting miracle to hunt down the total.
The target is tricky, but not impossible, as the visitors aim to win the match and win the series, 2-1.
