Days after stepping away from international cricket, Kane Williamson announced his new innings, making his debut as an author with an autobiography titled 'Bare Margins'. The former New Zealand captain retired mid-series against England on June 12, 2026, closing a 16-year career that made him the country’s leading run-scorer and century-maker.

Now he has given his admirers and readers a deeper look at his journey. On Instagram, Williamson shared that writing a book was never part of his plan, yet the process drew him in.

As per Williamson, he spent months reflecting on experiences that shaped him, eventually adding a chapter about retirement. The book promises to explore leadership, team culture, and the quiet chase of improvement that defined his time with the BlackCaps.

Williamson’s Instagram post gave a rare personal glimpse into Bare Margins.

He wrote, “To be honest, writing a book wasn’t something I ever imagined doing, and I have to admit I’ve taken a lot from the process. I’ve spent the last few months reflecting on experiences that have shaped me, and somewhere along the way found myself adding a chapter about retirement,"

"I was fortunate to be part of a Team I loved for 16 years and to see its culture evolve over that time. This book is really about that journey. I certainly wasn’t responsible for it on my own, yet it taught me a great deal about leadership, teamwork and the pursuit of improvement. Hopefully there’s something in it that resonates with others too,” Kane Williamson shared.

Bare Margins arrives at a natural pause in Williamson’s life. Rather than a standard tell-all, it focuses on the lessons learned inside a changing dressing room.

Kane Williamson’s fantastic journey as a cricketer

Williamson made his New Zealand debut in 2010 at age 20. Over 378 international matches, he amassed 19,346 runs, the most by any New Zealand batter across formats. He holds massive records for the most Test runs, most Test centuries, and most international hundreds for his country.

Under his leadership, New Zealand reached the finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2021 T20 World Cup, and he captained them to the inaugural World Test Championship title in 2021.
