Virat Kohli argues with umpire over Rajat Patidar's controversial wicket (Img: Screengrab Jiohotstar)
Defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), face Gujarat Titans (GT) in a high-octane IPL 2026 clash on Thursday, April 30. Notably, the reverse fixture has not been anything short of a Christopher Nolan-directed action movie.
After a great start, thanks to Virat Kohli’s flurry of boundaries, RCB lost wickets in quick succession, taking the match momentum in GT’s favour. However, the focus shifted completely to Virat Kohli, who was visibly frustrated after Rajat Patidar was ruled out post Jason Holder controversial catch.
The incident took place in the eighth over in RCB’s innings when Patidar attempted to pull a short delivery from Arshad Khan. The RCB skipper failed to connect cleanly, sending the ball high towards the deep, where Gujarat Titans had two fielders converging under it.

Will Virat Kohli Face IPL Ban After Arguing Over Umpire Decision In GT vs RCB Clash?
It is worth noting that under the BCCI Code of Conduct (Article 2.8), arguing, showing dissent, or having a prolonged discussion with an umpire regarding a decision is strictly prohibited.
Moreover, offences range from Level 1 to 4, with penalties including fines, match bans, or suspensions for showing excessive disappointment, shaking the head, or challenging decisions, especially under the IPL’s Code of Conduct.

Actions range from fines to bans, depending on the severity of the offence:
1. Fines and Monetary Penalties
Match Fee Deduction: Players are frequently fined a percentage of their match fee for expressing dissent or engaging in prolonged arguments.
Standard Penalty: For Level 1 offences (e.g., showing obvious disappointment, headshaking, or arguing), fines up to 50% of the match fee are common.
2. Demerit Points and Suspensions
Demerit Points: In addition to fines, players receive demerit points for breaching the Code of Conduct, which can lead to suspensions if accumulated.
Match Suspension: Repeated offences or more severe Level 2-4 offences can result in a suspension for one or more matches, potentially lasting up to one year or a lifetime ban for extreme violence.
Now, the question comes whether the match officials consider Virat Kohli’s actions an offence or dismiss it as a conversation in a serious situation amid Jason Holder catch controversy.
How did BCCI punish Nitish Rana in other similar instance in IPL 2026
Earlier in the tournament, Delhi Capitals batter Nitish Rana was fined 25% of his match fee and received a demerit point for a heated argument with the fourth umpire during the IPL 2026 match between CSK and DC. The argument arose in the 19th over when umpires denied Tristan Stubbs' request to change gloves due to sweat.
Talking about the match, Virat Kohli slammed five boundaries in a single over to give Royal Challengers Bengaluru a sensational start, but then departed in the powerplay, against Gujarat Titans in their IPL 2026 clash in Ahmedabad.
