In a big setback for CSK and Delhi Capitals, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Delhi Capitals batter Nitish Rana have been punished by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after the IPL 2025 match between CSK and Delhi Capitals. The match was played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, April 11.

Notably, CSK finally secured their first win of the IPL 2026 season after losing three matches in a row. They defeated Delhi Capitals by 23 runs in an exciting contest. CSK posted a strong total of 212/2, mainly due to a brilliant century by Sanju Samson.

After that, Delhi Capitals tried to chase the target, however they were bowled out for 189. This was largely due to an impressive bowling performance by Jamie Overton, who took four wickets.

Nitish Rana fined by BCCI

Nitish Rana faced punishment for his behavior during the match. He was fined 25% of his match fees and also received one demerit point. This action was taken after he used inappropriate language on the field.

The situation started when his teammate Tristan Stubbs requested to change his gloves in the 19th over. He mentioned discomfort due to humid conditions, as the gloves had become wet and difficult to use. However, the umpires denied this request in order to avoid delays in the game.

As a result, tension increased. Nitish Rana, who was not part of the playing eleven and was listed as an impact substitute, got involved in an argument with the fourth umpire. During this moment, the Delhi batter used abusive language out of frustration.

Following the incident, the BCCI reviewed the matter. Notably, Nitish Rana was found guilty of breaking Level 1 of the IPL Code of Conduct. Specifically, he violated Article 2.3, which relates to the use of offensive language during a match.

It is important to note that the 32-year-old batter accepted his mistake and agreed to the punishment given by the match referee. Therefore, the fine and demerit point were officially applied.

Ruturaj Gaikwad slapped with hefty fine

Meanwhile, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was also penalized, although for a different reason. Even though his team won the match, they failed to maintain the required over-rate.

As a result, he was fined INR 12 lakh under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with slow over-rate offences. Since this was CSK’s first offence in this category, the penalty was limited to a fine.

In addition, IPL 2026 has already seen several such disciplinary cases in the early matches. For example, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill have also been fined.

Notably, Shreyas Iyer committed this offence twice. First, he was penalized when Punjab Kings failed to maintain the over-rate against Gujarat Titans. After that, he repeated the same mistake in the next match against CSK. As a result, his second offence led to a higher fine of INR 24 lakh.
