England cricket is undergoing a nice transition at the moment. Several promising young talents, such as Jacob Bethell, are on the rise. The young side, led by Harry Brook, did great in the recently concluded World Cup, where the Three Lions bowed out in the semi-finals.

Jacob Bethell was the star performer in the marquee event. The southpaw amassed 280 runs in eight innings, averaging 35. His standout performance came against India in semis, where he slammed a century and nearly won the game for his side single-handedly.

The Hundred Reward Jacob Bethell With Captaincy

Bethell raised his stakes following the T20 World Cup and has been rewarded instantly for his extraordinary performance. In the latest events, the Hundred side Birmingham Phoenix have named the 22-year-old as their captain for the 2026 edition. The left-handed batter has now replaced Liam Livingstone as the new leader.

Notably, Bethell scored a brilliant 105 (48) in the T20 World Cup semis when his side lost early wickets and were chasing a mammoth target of 257 runs. Bethell displayed game awareness and temperament, which helped him earn a new role in his cricketing career.

Jacob Bethell Reacts On His New Role

Bethell already has a few captaincy records to his name as the left-handed batter led England against Ireland in 2025, making him the youngest captain in Three Lions’ history. Under his leadership, England secured a 2-0 series victory, marking an impressive start to his international captaincy.

"I'm incredibly proud to be named captain of the Birmingham Phoenix. Leading this team is a huge honour, and it's an opportunity I'm ready for, especially after the experience of captaining England last year. That responsibility taught me a lot about my own leadership and how to bring the best out of a group,” Bethell said.

For the women's side, Ellyse Perry will lead Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred 2026.

Jacob Bethell's Selection Dilemma For RCB

The Hundred has undergone several changes for the upcoming edition. Firstly, IPL franchises have acquired six of the Hundred teams. Also, the league is shifting more towards IPL style and will holds its first-ever auction on March 11 and 12.

The upcoming league is a big opportunity for Jacob Bethell, but before that he has an IPL test to pass. Notably, the IPL begins on March 28 and the southpaw has a lot to prove. At present, RCB need to find a solution to fit in Jacob Bethell in the team. At present, they have Phil Salt, Tim David, Romario Shepherd, and Josh Hazlewood as their preferred four overseas stars.

Therefore, it is a crucial next three months for Bethell and a successful campaign with RCB and then the Hundred will actually make him a strong contender to replace Harry Brook in the future.
