India is heading into the first Test of the much-awaited India tour of Sri Lanka 2026 with an important selection decision to make. The match will be played at Galle, a venue where spin has traditionally played a crucial role, and the team has four options in the squad.
Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar and off-spinner Saransh Jain are all available.
Now, with all eyes on the IND vs SL 1st Test, it seems that India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has provided an answer to the question buzzing around: How many spinners will Team India pick in the IND vs SL 1st Test?
India Likely to Pick 3 Spinners vs SL In 1st Test
It is important to mention that in the pre-match presentation, Morne Morkel stated that the Indian team might go with three spinners for the IND vs SL 1st Test.
The fact that cannot be denied is that Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav will be India’s first choice under head coach Gautam Gambhir. Jadeja provides experience, accuracy and valuable runs lower down the order.
On the other hand, Kuldeep gives India an attacking option capable of taking wickets and delivering left-arm wrist spin. He can also turn the ball while changing the pace and flight, and this factor can be important, keeping in mind the Sri Lankan conditions.

Another massive factor that works in Kuldeep’s favour is that he is one of the three players alongside KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja among the India’s current Test squad who have experience playing in Sri Lanka.
The third spinner that India might pick is Manav Suthar. He has impressed with his recent performances and has earned the opportunity to be part of the Test side.
In the recent County Div-One 2026, he played in four innings and bagged 11 wickets at an economy rate of 2.87. Earlier in the Afghanistan tour of India 2026, the young bowler picked up 7 wickets in two innings at an economy rate of 1.94.
India do have another option in Saransh Jain, who came into the squad after Washington Sundar’s injury, but he may have to wait for his debut.
India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has also indicated that three spinners could be the preferred combination.
“Kuldeep is there and he’s an attacking sort of bowler. For us, his experience and class can’t be overlooked. They’re all different in their own way — one (Suthar) turns it a bit more, one (Jadeja) is slightly more accurate. I don’t think three left-arm spinners are a massive concern for us. It’s about how (captain Shubman) Gill uses them at certain times. In terms of skill, they have what it takes to get 20 wickets for us,” Morkel told reporters in Galle on Thursday.
“Traditionally also if you look at the venue how it stacks and how it's been played up, that's sort of the way (three spinners) to go I think. The way we go with our spin bowling attack or spinners, it's a very attacking option." he added.
Should India Go With Three Spinners Instead Of Four?
It is vital to note that India should go with three spinners instead of four, as this will allow the team to bring an additional batter into the playing XI.
That could prove extremely valuable at Galle, where batting conditions are generally better early in the game before the surface becomes more difficult.
There is also a practical issue with playing four spinners. Jadeja and Kuldeep are almost certain starters, while choosing both Suthar and Jain would leave less room for batting strength.

“For sure, it’s a good-looking surface. I’d be slightly surprised if it goes the other way. Traditionally, at this venue, the first two days belong to the batting side, or your first innings.
So that will be important to whatever happens at the toss. If you bat first, make sure you go big; if you bowl first, get the ball in the right areas,” Morkel added.
Another factor India has to keep in mind is that Jasprit Bumrah is not part of the squad, so Mohammed Siraj will be picked as the frontline pacer.
Along with him, the second seamer could be selected from Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna. However, India do have another option in the form of Auqib Nabi.
Since neither is expected to strengthen the lower-order batting significantly, the extra batter becomes even more important.
Is Playing It Safe Better Move For India In 1st Test vs SL?
Yes, a three-spinner combination looks like the more sensible choice. Galle has a long history of rewarding spin bowlers, and the conditions are expected to become tougher for batting as the match moves ahead.
