From Sediqullah Atal To Sachin Tendulkar: Every Cricketer Who Smashed Massive Feats On Their Birthdays

Birthdays are usually about cakes, celebrations and a few quiet moments away from the spotlight. For some cricketers, however, the date has turned into something far more memorable, a day when they produced an innings or performance that became part of cricket history.

Afghanistan's Sediqullah Atal has now added his name to that special club in spectacular fashion. On his 25th birthday on August 12, 2026, Atal smashed 143 off 120 balls against Ireland in Belfast, with 17 fours and four sixes. 

The innings not only helped Afghanistan post 343/9 but also gave Atal the record for the highest individual ODI score made by a batter on his birthday, surpassing Tom Latham's unbeaten 140 from 2022.

But Atal is certainly not the first cricketer to turn a birthday into a piece of sporting history. So, let's take a look at cricketers who produced massive performances on their birthdays and turned what should have been a personal celebration into a piece of cricketing history.

1) Sediqullah Atal - 143 on his 25th birthday

Afghanistan batter Sediqullah Atal has just produced the newest and biggest chapter in the story of birthday cricket. Born on August 12, 2001, Atal turned 25 in 2026, and he celebrated the occasion by smashing 143 off 120 balls against Ireland in Belfast.

The left-hander's innings contained 17 fours and four sixes, and his 143 became the highest individual ODI score ever made on a player's birthday. Before Atal, the record belonged to New Zealand's Tom Latham, who scored 140* on his 30th birthday in 2022.

What made Atal's performance even more remarkable was the manner in which he responded to a difficult start to the series. After scores of 42 and 0, he produced a career-defining knock when Afghanistan needed it most.

He also shared a stunning 231-run partnership with Ibrahim Zadran, Afghanistan's highest second-wicket partnership in ODIs.

2) Patsy Hendren - 205* on his 41st birthday

Long before birthday centuries became a talking point in modern cricket, England legend Patsy Hendren produced a performance that remains almost impossible to comprehend.

Born on February 5, 1889, Hendren scored an unbeaten 205 against West Indies at Port of Spain on February 5, 1930, his 41st birthday.

The knock came in the second Test of England's tour of the West Indies and remains the highest individual Test score made on a player's birthday. Hendren also became the first cricketer to score a double-century on his birthday.

Hendren dominated the West Indies attack while sharing a massive fourth-wicket partnership with Les Ames, who himself scored 105. More than nine decades later, the number 205 still stands as a reminder of just how extraordinary Hendren's birthday was.

3) Sachin Tendulkar - 134 on his 25th birthday

Some birthdays become memorable. Sachin Tendulkar's 25th birthday became part of cricket folklore. Born on April 24, 1973, Tendulkar turned 25 in 1998 and celebrated by smashing 134 against Australia in the Coca-Cola Cup final at Sharjah.

India were chasing 273, and Tendulkar produced a magnificent 134 from 131 balls, with 12 fours and three sixes, to help India chase down the target with nine balls to spare.

Tendulkar was named Player of the Match as well as Player of the Series, finishing the tournament with 435 runs. His birthday knock eventually became the second-highest ODI score made on a player's birthday, until Atal's 143 in 2026 pushed it down another place.

4) Virat Kohli - 101* on his 35th birthday

Few cricket grounds could have provided a more fitting stage for Virat Kohli to produce a birthday masterpiece than Eden Gardens. Born on November 5, 1988, Kohli turned 35 during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

On that very day, he walked out against South Africa in Kolkata and produced an unbeaten 101 from 121 balls. The innings contained 10 fours and helped India post 326/5 before bowling South Africa out for just 83.

Kohli's century was especially significant because it came at a World Cup, in front of a packed Eden Gardens, and brought him level with Sachin Tendulkar's then-record tally of 49 ODI centuries.

He also became the seventh player to score an ODI century on his birthday. There was something almost cinematic about the moment. The player who had spent years being compared with Tendulkar was standing in the middle of Eden Gardens on his birthday, producing a century that moved him closer to one of the most iconic records in the history of Indian cricket.

5) David Warner - 100* on his 33rd birthday

Australian cricket's most explosive opener also gave himself a birthday present that he could hardly have scripted better. David Warner, born on October 27, 1986, turned 33 in 2019 and smashed his maiden T20I century against Sri Lanka in Adelaide.

Warner finished unbeaten on 100 from 56 balls, with 10 fours and four sixes. He reached the century with a single on the final ball of Australia's innings.

Australia finished with a huge 233/2 before bowling Sri Lanka out for 99, winning by 134 runs. The century was significant beyond the birthday celebrations.

Warner had already achieved almost everything in international cricket, but remarkably, he had never scored a T20I hundred. He finally did it on his 33rd birthday. And he did it unbeaten.

6) Vinod Kambli - 100* on his 21st birthday

Before Tendulkar, Kohli, Vinod Kambli was the man who started the ODI century tradition. Born on January 18, 1972, Kambli turned 21 in 1993 and became the first batter to score an ODI century on his birthday.

Playing England in Jaipur, the young left-hander remained unbeaten on 100, helping India to victory. What makes the story even more emotional is that Kambli was playing alongside his childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar, with whom he had grown up playing cricket in Mumbai.

Tendulkar himself would go on to score a birthday century five years later. Kambli's career ultimately took a very different path from his childhood friend's, but his name remains permanently attached to one of the most unique firsts in cricket history.
