As the excitement of the ongoing IPL 2026 is at an all-time high, attention is steadily shifting toward India's future T20I matches and the preparations for the 2028 T20 World Cup cycle. Discussions around leadership have also intensified with Suryakumar Yadav's T20 captaincy in danger.
It is important to mention that Suryakumar Yadav currently leads the side and recently guided India to a memorable T20 World Cup 2026 win.
Earlier reports suggested Shreyas Iyer was the first name to appear to take over the T20 captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav. However, the latest developments hint at a surprising twist in the leadership race.
Shreyas Iyer sidelined for India T20I captaincy
As per earlier reports, Shreyas Iyer appeared to be the natural successor to Suryakumar Yadav. Known for his calm temperament and proven leadership in IPL for Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Punjab Kings, Shreyas was seen as a long-term player who could guide India into the next T20 era.
Reports also indicated that the selectors were keen on building a new leadership group focused on the 2028 World Cup.
However, a recent report from Cricblogger suggests that the selectors are hesitant to fast-track his appointment. One of the key concerns is that Shreyas Iyer was not part of India's T20 World Cup squad.
The India's selection committee and Gautam Gambhir reportedly prefer a captain who is already an integral part of the playing XI rather than bringing someone in solely for leadership duties.
"Sources said that Shreyas Iyer is one of the options, but the selectors are reluctant to fast-track a candidate into the national side when he wasn’t even part of the World Cup squad" as per cricblogger.
Additionally, with India considering a split-squad approach due to a packed international calendar, Shreyas Iyer may still get opportunities to lead a secondary T20 side.
Surprising pick emerges as SKY's replacement
It is vital to note that Ishan Kishan has emerged as a leading candidate to take over the T20 captaincy, as per cricblogger.

The report suggests that the selectors are close to reaching an agreement, with Ishan Kishan currently ahead in the race alongside the names of Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and Sanju Samson.
Ishan Kishan recently led Jharkhand to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in 2025-26 and was also appointed as SRH’s captain in IPL 2026 for the initial matches. Moreover, Ishan Kishan's age and fitness make him a suitable long-term option as India looks to build a T20 squad for the future.
Is time over for Suryakumar Yadav's T20I captaincy?
Suryakumar Yadav's captaincy, despite his World Cup-winning success, has come under scrutiny due to inconsistent performances and fitness concerns.
With age also becoming a factor, he is expected to be over 37 by the next T20 World Cup, and the selectors are keen to make a timely transition.
Talking about Suryakumar Yadav’s stats, he is currently playing in IPL 2026. The MI star player has played 8 innings and scored 162 runs at an average of 20.25 and a strike rate of 140.87 so far.
Before the the IPL, the dynamic player featured in the T20 World Cup 2026, and made 242 runs in 9 innings at an average of 30.25 and a strike-rate of 136.72.
