Phil Salt in IPL 2026 for RCB (Source: AFP)
The defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are set to face Gujarat Titans (GT) in Match 42 of the IPL 2026 on April 30 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
With both teams having played eight matches so far, RCB are in strong form, sitting second on the points table with six wins, while GT have had an inconsistent run, winning four and losing four.
RCB head into this clash with momentum on their side, especially after a dominant win over Delhi Capitals, where they bowled out the opposition for just 75 and chased it down in a little over six overs.
However, one key concern for RCB is the availability of their explosive opener Phil Salt.
Why is Phil Salt not playing?
It is important to note that the England wicketkeeper-batter suffered an injury during a practice session ahead of the April 24 match against GT. Since then, the franchise has not disclosed the exact nature of the injury.
Phil Salt missed the match against GT earlier and was also unavailable for the clash against Delhi Capitals. Reports suggest that he has not been seen training in the nets and did not travel with the squad to Ahmedabad, indicating that he is still not match-fit (as per TV9 Kannada).
There is uncertainty about whether the injury is a minor niggle or something more serious. If it is a minor issue, Phil Salt could return for RCB’s next fixture against LSG on May 7, after a six-day break.
Before his injury, Salt had started to find form, scoring 202 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 168.
Will Phil Salt play today's GT vs RCB clash?
As things stand, Phil Salt is highly unlikely to feature in today's GT vs RCB match. His absence from training and travel plans strongly suggests that RCB are taking a cautious approach with his recovery.

For a team performing well overall, his absence is manageable, but it does affect their opening combination and overseas balance. RCB will likely wait until he is fully fit before bringing him back into the playing XI.
Who will play in place of Phil Salt?
In Phil Salt’s absence, Jacob Bethell has been given the responsibility to open alongside Virat Kohli. While Bethell performed well in the T20 World Cup, he has yet to make a big impact for RCB this season.
He has scored 34 runs across two matches, with modest contributions of 14 and 20. The opening partnerships with Virat Kohli have also been relatively quiet compared to RCB's usual explosive starts.
RCB's IPL 2026 campaign so far
Led by Rajat Patidar, RCB have been one of the standout teams this season. With six wins in eight matches, they are firmly in contention for the top spot. Their batting has been dominant, consistently posting big scores, including multiple 200+ totals earlier in the season.
Virat Kohli, captain Rajat Patidar and Devdutt Padikkal have performed consistently for the team. The bowling unit, featuring Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, has also been exceptional, especially in the powerplay.
With a net run rate of +1.919, the Bengaluru-based franchise has a strong chance to climb to the top of the table with a win in the GT vs RCB match.
