The IPL 2026 season has been hit by controversy after Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag was seen in a viral clip using a vape device during a match against Punjab Kings on April 28 in Mullanpur.

The footage, captured during the 16th over of Rajasthan’s chase, showed Riyan Parag seated in the dressing room alongside teammates shortly after his dismissal.

The visuals spread quickly across social media, drawing criticism from fans and raising questions about discipline and rules inside team areas during live matches.

The incident is more controversial because vaping is illegal in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act (PECA), 2019.

Latest UPDATE on Riyan Parag’s vape incident

According to the latest update shared by Sports Correspondent Vipul Kashyap (ANI), sources indicate that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is unlikely to take direct action against Riyan Parag.

The reason is that there reportedly is no clear rule in the IPL or the BCCI code of conduct that allows punishment for such an act.

Instead, the focus may shift to match officials. The board is said to be examining how a player could allegedly bring and use such a device inside the dressing room during a live match.

If action is taken, it could be directed at the match referee or officials responsible for maintaining discipline and security within restricted areas.

"Board will punish and penalise the match referee that how a player can bring a ban substance in the dressing room during a live match, no such provision in the rule book to penalise Riyan: Sources, @rajasthanroyals @IPL" - Vipul Kashyap.

It is worth noting that during the PBKS vs RR match, Amit Sharma was the match referee, and if these reports are to be believed, he would receive punishment for this act.

How can BCCI punish the match referee in Riyan Parag’s vape case?

While players are expected to follow strict guidelines, match officials, including referees, also carry responsibility for maintaining the rules.

The BCCI is now expected to review the role of the match referee assigned to the PBKS vs RR game, which is Amit Sharma. If it is found that proper checks were not carried out, the referee could face disciplinary action.

Under BCCI rules, match referees are responsible for ensuring that dressing room protocols are followed. This includes preventing prohibited items or substances from entering secure areas.

Vaping devices, depending on tournament rules, may be considered restricted items, especially in official match environments.

  • Financial punishment: The referee may be fined a portion or the full amount of their match fee.
  • Suspension: A temporary ban from officiating in ongoing IPL matches or other domestic tournaments could be imposed.

However, as of now, no official decision has been made by the BCCI either on Riyan Parag or the match referee.
