Angkrish Raghuvanshi of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) courted controversy in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. This was during KKR’s recent thrilling Super Over win over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Ekana Stadium on April 26.

This was KKR’s first win of the IPL 2026, though they had one point to their name due to their match against Punjab Kings getting rained out in Kolkata. However, they finally got onto the IPL 2026 points table with a win over LSG.

KKR defeats LSG in a thrilling super over win

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant won the toss and chose to field first. Cameron Green’s 34 and Rinku Singh’s 83* were the reason for Kolkata Knight Riders scoring 155/7 in 20 overs. Mohsin Khan had performed well, taking 5/23 in his 4 overs.

In response, Rishabh Pant made 42, Aiden Markram made 31, and Ayush Badoni made 24 runs, and in the last over, Mohammad Shami hit a six off the last ball to tie the game.

The Super over saw Sunil Narine dismiss both Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram as LSG only managed 1 run. In response, Rinku Singh hit Prince Yadav’s first ball for a four and won KKR the game and important two points.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s obstructing the field dismissal controversy

KKR batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi was dismissed for 9 runs in 8 balls as he was given out obstructing the field. The incident happened in the 5th over, when Raghuvanshi decided to take a single after gently pushing a Prince Yadav delivery into the mid-on area.

Raghuvanshi was forced to spin around in the middle and dash back to his crease after his batting partner Cameron Green abruptly ordered him back.

The LSG fielder attempted to run the young player out by throwing the ball towards wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant as he dove to save himself, but the ball struck Raghuvanshi on the legs. Mohammed Shami and captain Pant filed an appeal as a result, arguing that the KKR batter had purposefully blocked the throw.

Raghuvanshi was dismissed after the third umpire reviewed the footage and discovered that he had purposefully altered his running path and blocked the ball, which is considered "obstructing the field."

What did MCC say about Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s dismissal?

The Marylebone Cricket Club, or the MCC, the guardians of the laws of cricket, have shared their viewpoint on the dismissal of the KKR batter. As per MCC, Law 37.1.1 was applied, and it says that either batter is out Obstructing the Field if they “willfully attempt to obstruct or distract the fielding side by word or action.”

In Tom Smith's Cricket Umpiring and Scoring, the MCC's official view of the Laws of Cricket, there is a long-standing and widely recognized view that states that a batter is running when the throw is made.

It states, "A batter who changes direction while running, particularly one who changes direction to run on the pitch or takes any other route that would not be the quickest way to the other end, is making a willful act.”

These requirements are obviously met by Raghuvanshi. He is on the off side of the wicket when he starts his run. The fielder crosses to the middle of the pitch as soon as the ball reaches him, which is not where he should be running anyhow. He immediately turns and sprints back on the leg side, putting himself between the ball and the wicket.

By definition, this is a deliberate act. The ball would not have struck him, and there would have been no obstruction if he had remained off the field and on the offside.

He would not have been out if he had started racing down the leg side, turned, and landed on the same side before being struck by the ball; he would have been in the way but not intentionally. His demise was brought about by his deliberate crossing of the field.
