How Mohammad Amir's British Citizenship Could Bring An End To His PSL Career

Mohammad Amir, the former Pakistan pacer, moved to England a few years ago, and recently the speedster was granted British Citizenship. However, this could create trouble for the pace bowler and could create complications for his participation in the PSL 2027 season.

Previously, Amir played in the PSL as a local player, but now, the situation has changed as the PSL will have to accommodate him as an overseas player in the upcoming PSL 2027.

How Amir's British Citizenship could create trouble for his PSL aspirations

From now on, if Mohammad Amir puts forward his name in the PSL, he will be treated as a foreign player and not a local star. Meaning, teams will have to use one of their overseas slots to incorporate him into their squad for PSL 2027.

Last season, Amir played for the Rawalpindi side, and he was bought for PKR 5.4 crores in the PSL auction. He was amongst the highest earners in the team, but now that Amir is a British Citizen, the equation changes for him and the team.

He was given a two-year contract that covered the 2026 and 2027 seasons, but that contract was given to him, citing him as a local player and not an overseas star.

What the PSL rules say as Amir's PSL contract is in limbo

Under the PSL rules and regulations, each franchise can retain up to seven players for PSL 12, with the remaining players going straight into the auction pool.

The PSL governing body has not spoken publicly regarding Amir’s contract situation, but as per the rules, Rawalpindiz cannot keep the former Pakistan pacer under the domestic players’ category.

Either his existing deal has to be changed, or he might have to be released. If the team doesn’t want to release him, they may have to use an overseas slot to retain Amir for the PSL 2027 campaign.

PSL 2027 could be Amir’s final season in the tournament, but the rumours have not been clarified by either the player, PSL, or PCB.

Why Rawalpindi might not retain Amir for PSL 2027

To retain him, the franchise would have to vacate an overseas slot, and that might not be a feasible option. Moreover, the left-arm pacer might play just one more season in the league, and retaining him in an overseas slot for just one campaign could be a gamble.

Moreover, his recent performances have not been up to the mark, and Rawalpindi might be tempted not to retain him. In the ongoing The Hundred, Amir has been expensive, and after playing five matches, he has scalped just 5 wickets as wickets have been hard to come by.

Even in the English domestic tournament (Vitality T20 Blast), the 34-year-old scalped just 6 wickets in seven matches as batters found him easy to tackle.

While his economy rate in both The Hundred and the Vitality Blast has been good, as a lead pacer, wickets have dried up and Amir has failed to deliver the goods with the ball in hand.

Hence, his PSL franchise might be interested in retaining someone who can guarantee them wickets in the power play.
