Glenn Phillips notched up his maiden Test century last week, doing so against England in New Zealand’s all-important second Test of the series. Batting at number seven, the all-rounder scored a courageous 100 off 135 balls with 18 elegant boundaries at The Oval in London.
Glenn’s innings catapulted the New Zealand first innings total to 391 after crashing to 107-4 at one stage of the opening day.
Notably, at one point of his innings, the cricketer wore sunglasses while facing England’s tearaway paceman and comeback man Jofra Archer. His move sparked much curiosity among fans, prompting many to wonder about the unusual decision during a crucial phase of his innings.
Why did Glenn Phillips use sunglasses against Jofra Archer?
After the match, Glenn Phillips explained why he wore sunglasses while facing Jofra Archer at The Oval.
Speaking to the reporters, the 29-year-old said that his eyes are sensitive to bright light, and he wore sunglasses to see the ball clearly while dealing with glare from the sight screen.

Phillips also emphasised the need for the same, especially while facing someone like Jofra Archer, who regularly clocks over 140 km/hr.
He said “My eyes are very sensitive to bright light. When you're facing someone like Archer at 140 km/h, I'd rather see the ball clearly than deal with glare from the sight screen. I've been dismissed before because of visibility issues, so now I put my pride aside, wear the sunglasses, and give myself the best chance.”
Glenn Phillips and Matt Henry win it for New Zealand
Wearing sunglasses seemed to have worked out in favour of Glenn Phillips, as the 29-year-old scored a courageous century from 135 balls on Days 1 and 2 of The Oval Test. The star all-rounder successfully countered Jofra Archer in his comeback Test, debutant Sonny Baker and part-timer Jacob Bethell amid his three-wicket haul.
A five-fer for New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry skittled England for just 291 as the visitors walked away with a 100-run lead at the halfway stage of the match.
Fifties from all-rounders Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell and a regal 121 from Henry Nicholls extended the New Zealand lead to 462 runs. Defending 463, Matt Henry added six more wickets to his tally to claim 11 for the match to shoot out the Englishmen for just 209.
With New Zealand winning the match by 253 runs, the visitors have brought the three-match Test series to level terms.
England and New Zealand set for decider in Nottingham
With the series levelled at 1-1, England and New Zealand teams will now be crossing paths in the third and final Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. The match will be played between June 25 and June 29 later this week.
The ECB has recalled regular captain Ben Stokes and all-rounder Gus Atkinson back into the team for the impending decider, following their nightclub incident a couple of weeks ago.
New Zealand will now look to build on the momentum from their emphatic Oval triumph and clinch the series in the decisive Test at Trent Bridge.
