There have been a lot of talks around the question of whether Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will play anymore in T20Is or not. These questions are being raised after Maxwell endured a miserable run of form in Australia’s horrific T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.
Glenn Maxwell couldn’t live up to the Aussie expectations, be it with the bat or the ball. He scored only 62 runs in three innings at a poor average of 20.66 and a strike rate of just 110.71. Besides that, he bagged only two wickets in three innings after bowling six overs at an expensive economy rate of 7.16.
Meanwhile, the veteran Australian all-rounder has finally broken his silence around the speculations on his retirement from the shortest format of the game. He also explained his future plans in the internationals, given the signs of ageing, as he is already 37.
Glenn Maxwell clears air around his T20I future
Speaking to the reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday, Glenn Maxwell answered a couple of questions surrounding his retirement and future plans. He also downplayed the assumptions on his T20I retirement.
“I think not making a decision around my future was probably based more on what's to come over the next 12 months. There's not a whole lot of T20 cricket planned,” Maxwell told the press.
“So there's probably no need to make any sort of formal announcements, and just see how my body's going and see how I'm travelling and if there's opportunities to play in the future, hopefully I'm fit and firing,” he added later.
Furthermore, the 37-year-old expressed his desire to feature for Australia at the LA Olympics and at the next T20 World Cup in 2028.
“Fit and firing? Hopefully. But yeah, not setting any dates,” he said on possibilities and his hopes of continuing till both the marquee international tournaments. Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell will be in action in the upcoming PSL 2026 for the Hyderabad Kingsmen franchise. It will be his first ever stint in the tournament.

Struggles continue for Maxwell in T20Is
Looking at Glenn Maxwell’s performances in the shortest formats, he has been struggling both with the bat and ball for the last two years. Since the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024, Maxwell has scored just 297 runs in 14 innings, with an average of just 22.84, including only one half-century.
His strike rate has been quite good at 151.53, but the right-handed batter has failed to convert the quick starts into the big knocks during this span. Besides that, he has scalped only eight wickets in 11 innings at an economy rate of 8.91 and a bowling strike rate of 8.91.
So, the aforementioned numbers reflect the veteran all-rounder’s struggle in the shortest format of the game. These stats might also make the Australian management think before investing in Glenn Maxwell for their future plans in T20Is.
Another T20 World Cup misery for Australia
Group-stage exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 was another misery for Australia in the marquee international tournament. Earlier in the previous edition in 2024, they were knocked out in the tournament’s Super-8 stage.
The Mitchell Marsh-led Aussie side faced severe criticism after losing to Afghanistan and India in the Super-8. The 2021 World T20 champions failed once again in the 2026 edition, being knocked out in the group stage after losing to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.
So, Australia’s hopes of qualifying for the LA Olympics 2028 have also faced a big blow. Meanwhile, the New Zealand are expected to qualify for the global spectacle from the Oceania continent as per rankings.
