Fact Check: Did Nahid Rana Break Shoaib Akhtar's Fastest Delivery Record

Nahid Rana went wicketless against Australia in the second ODI in Mirpur, mere days after unleashing a match-winning spell against the same opponents at the same venue. Sending down his nine overs in a 42-overs-a-side game on Thursday, June 11, the speedster conceded 45 runs at a slightly expensive economy of five.

Even though Rana failed to take a wicket in the second ODI of the series, Bangladesh bowlers still managed to restrict Australia to 187-8 in 42 overs amid rain interruptions

The speedster seemingly delivered a 158.4 km/h thunderbolt towards well-set Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne in the final over of his spell. While many fans perceived it to be the fastest-delivery ever recorded in the game, the reality behind the viral claim paints a different picture.

Nahid Rana clocks 133 km/hr, Shoaib Akhtar record still safe

Nahid Rana ruffled Australia’s well-set middle order batter Marnus Labuschagne with a scorching bouncer in the 37th over of the match in Mirpur. Certain social media handles reported that Rana’s delivery clocked at 158.4 km/h to become the fastest delivery recorded in the history of the game.

However, the scorecard and the on-air commentators revealed that Rana’s delivery clocked 133 km/hr instead.

Interestingly, even if the delivery had clocked 158.4 km/h, it would not have been the world’s fastest delivery as claimed by those handles. Former Pakistan speed demon Shoaib Akhtar continues to hold the prestigious record for clocking 161.3 km/hr against England back during the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Fellow quicks like Brett Lee, Shaun Tait, Jeff Thompson and Mitchell Starc have also bowled over 160 km/hr at some stage during their careers, thus making Nahid Rana’s perceived 158.4 km/h delivery well short of the all-time record, let alone the actual speed of 133 km/hr as confirmed by the commentators.

Rana in prime form, wins ICC award

Nahid Rana, who made his Bangladesh debut a couple of years ago, is on a generational run in his second coming to international cricket. The speedster recently decimated Pakistan by picking up 10 wickets in just two Tests to star in Bangladesh’s historic 2-0 series win.

The 23-year-old also won the ICC Player of the Month award for the month of April 2026 for his ODI heroics against New Zealand.

In the first ODI of the ongoing series against Australia, the young tearaway paceman bulldozed the visitors with match-winning figures of 4-41.

Australia restricted to 187 in must-win game

Batting first, Australia charted just 187-8 in a 42-overs innings at the Sher-E-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. Marnus Labuschagne and Xavier Bartlett scored fighting half-centuries in the lower order.

For Bangladesh, opening strikes from Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman decimated Australia’s top order at 0-3 at one stage. Both Ahmed and Rahman ended picking three wickets each in the innings.

Tanvir Islam also chipped in with two from his 10 overs, while Nahid Rana went wicketless in the game for once.
