Pakistan faces India challenge for Olympics qualification [Source: BCCI, AFP]
The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have confirmed the qualification pathway for all teams for the cricket event of the 2028 Olympics. It is worth noting that as many as six nations each will be competing in the men’s and women’s T20 events in Los Angeles two years from now.
For the Pakistan men’s cricket team, arch-rivals India present one of the many hurdles as the ‘Men in Green’ are now presented with a huge challenge in qualifying for the big games. Here is a look at Pakistan’s scenario for the Olympics 2028 men’s T20 qualification.
ICC confirms Olympics scenario for Pakistan and others
As confirmed by the ICC on their official website on Monday, June 29, the highest ranked nation from continents Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania will secure automatic qualification for the men's T20 event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The ICC rankings of those four teams will be determined based on the ICC Men's T20I Rankings at the conclusion of the qualification period on December 31, 2026.

The Indian men’s cricket team is currently not only the highest-ranked Asian team in ICC T20I rankings, but also the number one side in the world with 272 rating points.
India’s dominance poses a massive threat for Pakistan men’s team, as they are placed sixth on the ICC T20I rankings with mere 240 rating points. In a bid to qualify for the 2028 Olympics Men’s T20 event, the Pakistan team must overtake arch-rivals India on the ICC T20I rankings before December 31 later this year.
What will happen if Pakistan fails to overtake India?
If Pakistan fails to surpass India on the men’s ICC T20I team rankings before December 31 this year, the ‘Men in Green’ will have to participate in the ICC Olympic Qualifiers 2027 next year.
The ICC Olympics Qualifier 2027 will feature eight teams, with the winner claiming a berth for the men's T20 event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Besides the teams that miss out on direct qualification, the remaining participants will be selected based on the ICC Men's T20I Rankings. The ICC is yet to announce the dates and host nation for the qualifier.
So, to sum up, hosts USA will be one of the participants in the Men's T20 event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, provided they finish inside the top 15 of the ICC Men's T20I Rankings at any point between June 30 and December 31.
The remaining five places will be occupied by the highest-ranked teams from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania, along with the winner of the ICC Olympics Qualifier 2027.
Pakistan’s road ahead in 2026
Unfortunately for Pakistan, the ‘Men in Green’ do not have as many T20I assignments lined up this year. Moreover, in the coming months, the Pakistan team will be travelling to West Indies and England purely for Test series.
The team must make full use of their limited T20I opportunities this year, and also hope for India to lose as many as games as possible in the next few months to fall down on the ICC T20I men’s team rankings.
