CSA Announces Shock Contract List [Source: AFP]
In a major development, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced its central contract list for the upcoming calendar year. However, David Miller, a senior figure, was mysteriously dropped from the list.
The central contract list is a big development for CSA as they are preparing for the home 2027 ODI World Cup. This group of players will most likely form the core of the Proteas’ squad for the ICC event.
Cricket South Africa announces the central contract list
On Tuesday, March 31, Cricket South Africa (CSA) released the central contract list for the upcoming year. Interestingly, David Miller was snubbed. He was on a hybrid deal last year.
However, now no contract at all means a strong hint that international retirement may be near for Miller. He will likely continue playing franchise cricket worldwide.
Apart from David Miller, Rassie van der Dussen was also dropped from the hybrid list. Anrich Nortje, meanwhile, still remains without a contract due to injury history.
That being said, the central contract list clearly suggests that CSA is building for the future. Players with first-time contracts include Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Matthew Breetzke and Ottneil Baartman.
This shift in the contract list signals a transition phase. With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, CSA wants to allow a new set of players to form the core and leave the veterans behind.

Temba Bavuma, David Bedingham, Ottneil Baartman, Corbin Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne
Simon Harmer given a ‘hybrid contract’
CSA is one board that allows its players to stay on hybrid contracts. A hybrid contract is something that allows contracted players to play leagues as and when they like, being selectively available for national duty.
It is a flexible model, but David Miller is now completely outside even this system. In the current centrally contracted list, only all-rounder Simon Harmer is given a hybrid contract.
Apart from this, 20 ‘Players of National Interest’ have also been identified. These are backup options as well as future international prospects.
Also, in women’s cricket, 15 central contracts were awarded, with Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp being the core. The focus for them is the upcoming T20 World Cup.
South Africa to face Australia next
That being said, South Africa will next play a high-profile home series against Australia, featuring three ODIs and as many Tests, crucial for both white-ball prep and the World Test Championship cycle.
The first ODI will be played on September 24. After the final ODI, the Test series will begin on October 9. Also, the second Test will be played on October 18. It will certainly be a big test for South Africa’s new-look squad.
