Cooper Connolly could not have asked for a better IPL debut on Tuesday in Match 4 of the ongoing edition in Mullanpur. In the process, he kept the legacy built by Australians across different editions in the IPL intact.

Despite being an all-rounder, Connolly came to bat at No. 3 and was not allowed to bowl for Punjab Kings. However, he did wonderfully well with the willow in hand and made a half-century in 34 balls.

With that, he became the sixth Australian batter to score a half-century on IPL debut, after Michael Hussey, Shaun Marsh, James Hopes, David Warner and Jake Fraser-McGurk.

Coming to chase a below-par 163, Connolly came in the middle after Priyansh Arya’s early departure. He and Prabhsimran Singh batted fearlessly, forging a 76-run stand for the second wicket to make the job easy for others.

Notably, Punjab Kings did not bid for a single player in the last IPL auction until Cooper Connolly was up for grabs. Shreyas and Ponting-led think tank showed trust in him, and eventually secured the services of the promising Australian all-rounder for INR 3 crore.
