Damien Martyn has dropped a huge health update mere weeks after getting released from the hospital. Late last month, the former Australian cricketer was rushed to a hospital when his health deteriorated rapidly.
Martyn was said to be diagnosed with meningitis, a fatal disease that causes inflammation of protective membranes covering the spinal cord and brain. The 54-year-old was put on induced coma as he received his treatment at the Gold Coast University Hospital in Brisbane.

On Wednesday, January 28, roughly a couple of weeks after getting discharged from the hospital, champion Australian cricketer Damien Martyn dropped a huge health update. The two-time World Cup winner also thanked his fans for their “overwhelming love and support” during his time battling for life.
Taking to X, he wrote “I can’t believe it’s been a month from yesterday that I was rushed to hospital. It’s certainly been an eventful January but the love and support still pouring in has been overwhelming. To the people that have shared their stories of having this disease and how they coped during and after has helped me immensely so I thank you.”
Damien Martyn added that he is now looking forward to going back to his normal routine, and his life-threatening hospital admission has made him “appreciate” life even more.
He added, “I’m on the mend and looking forward to getting back to my normal self. To be honest it makes you appreciate so many things. I’m so happy to just get back on the beach have a walk and swim.”

As he was battling a life-threatening disease, Martyn and his family received overwhelming love and support from a legion of cricket fans, experts and players.
In early January, he was moved out of the ICU, with his condition making a dramatical improvement. Former Australian captain Mark Waugh even called Martyn’s recovery “almost a miracle”.

Damien played 279 internationals for Australia, including 67 Tests, all between the years 1992 and 2006. In his 109 Test innings, the cricketer aggregated 4,406 runs at an average of 46.37 with 13 hundreds and 23 half-centuries.
The right-handed batter played a huge role in Australia conquering India back in 2004 to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1.
Martyn also unleashed a cracking half-century during his match-defining partnership with then captain Ricky Ponting in the final to lift the 2003 ICC ODI World Cup in South Africa.
Having played 208 ODIs for Australia, the middle-order run machine minted 5,346 runs at an average of 40.80 and with a strike rate of nearly 80. He also played four T20I matches, where he maintained a staggering strike rate of 162.16.
