Born in Punjab, raised in Haryana, and migrated to Tamil Nadu for greater cricketing opportunities, Gurjapneet Singh’s fairytale journey culminated in October 2024 when he received his maiden Ranji Trophy cap for the southern state.
A month later, the lanky fast bowler got richer by INR 2.20 crores courtesy of an all-out bid from the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Standing tall at 6'3”, Gurjapneet Singh made the life-changing decision of moving to Chennai at a tender age of 17 back in 2016. The aspiring cricketer enrolled himself in Guru Nanak College and steadily moved up the ranks to play for their division teams.
Gurjapneet Singh IPL Career
A few years later, in mid-2021, Gurjapneet Singh found a place in the Dindigul Dragons, a Ravichandran Ashwin-starrer team in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). Working closely with the likes of former CSK cricketer Yo Mahesh, Gurjapneet, by his own admission, sharpened his yorkers and slower variations.
Upon spotting Gurjapneet’s abilities as a potential death-overs specialist, CSK brought him in as their net bowler. After bowling against the likes of MS Dhoni, the speedster clean-bowled India’s batting giant Virat Kohli in the Chepauk nets in the lead-up to India’s home Test against Bangladesh in September 2024.
Gurjapneet also made his first-class debut a memorable occasion for himself and a historic one for Tamil Nadu, as he snared match-winning figures of 6-22 from 14 overs against Saurashtra the following month, which included the prized scalp of India’s perennial batting barnacle Cheteshwar Pujara.
Fittingly, he bagged his maiden IPL contract for the CSK, a de facto 'home team' of the state he migrated to. With a base price of INR 30 lakh and generating nearly 7.5 times that value, Gurjapneet Singh proudly secured his place in the 'Yellow Brigade' for his debut IPL season.
However, Singh was ruled out of the IPL 2025 season for the Chennai-based franchise due to a groin injury sustained during the tournament, leading to his replacement by Dewald Brevis.
Despite the injury in April 2025, he remained with the squad for rehabilitation. He was retained by the franchise for the IPL 2026.
