The Chennai Super Kings had a forgettable time in the IPL 2026. Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK finished eighth on the ten-team IPL points table, managing only six wins in 14 matches.
Considering they have failed to enter the IPL playoffs in three consecutive seasons, the Super Kings are looking to revamp their core for the 2027 season. For starters, CSK have already parted ways with Stephen Fleming, who served as their head coach from 2009 until the end of IPL 2026.
CSK to assess fitness of all players before IPL 2027
CSK have summoned their squad members to assess their fitness. Injury to key players was a major reason behind the Super Kings' downfall. So, as they eye redemption in the IPL, the Chennai-based franchise will be looking to get rid of those players who let them down with their fitness issues in IPL 2026.
As the five-time champions prepare their blueprint for next season, here are five players who might miss the IPL 2027 retention due to poor fitness.
1. MS Dhoni
Former CSK captain and legendary Indian cricketer MS Dhoni might be the biggest name to miss out on the IPL 2027 retention list due to fitness concerns. Dhoni missed the entire IPL 2026 season due to calf and thumb injuries.
Dhoni sustained the injury during CSK's pre-IPL season camp and couldn't regain match fitness, missing all group-stage matches of the tournament. He is already 44 and has been battling with knee and calf muscle injuries for the last few seasons.
Considering Dhoni has been injury-prone of late and is way past his prime as a batter, the Super Kings could bid adieu to the veteran cricketer and free up 4 Crores ahead of IPL 2027.
2. Matthew Short
| Month and Year | Injury | Impact |
| Feb-Mar 2025 | Quad injury | Missed Champions Trophy |
| August 2025 | Side strain | Out of SA series |
| October 2025 | Finger injury | Out of India T20Is |
| March 2026 | Fractured Thumb | Missed IPL 2026 matches |
The data presented in the table above shows the timeline of Matthew Short's injuries in the recent times. The Australian has been prone to injuries, missing several crucial assignments in international cricket as well as IPL.
Short sustained a thumb injury, which ruled him out of the initial matches in the IPL 2026. Although CSK had signed him as a utility package, the Australian allrounder couldn't deliver the goods amid fitness concerns.
Thus, Matthew Short, who could feature in only three matches due to the injury, might find himself outside CSK's retention list for IPL 2027.

3. Nathan Ellis
Australia's fast bowler Nathan Ellis was one of CSK's high-profile retentions as the franchise retained him for 2 Crore. The Super Kings built the rest of their bowling lineup around Ellis, expecting the Australian to spearhead their attack in the middle and death overs.
However, Nathan Ellis sustained a hamstring injury and was eventually ruled out of the IPL 2026 season. In his absence, the Super Kings blew hot and cold with the ball, finishing the season with the fourth-lowest dismissals.
Therefore, given how his fitness setback derailed the Super Kings' campaign, the Chennai-based team could consider releasing Nathan Ellis ahead of IPL 2027.
4. Spencer Johnson
Left-arm Australian pacer Spencer Johnson joined the CSK IPL squad as a replacement for Nathan Ellis. While the franchise expected him to emerge as a surprise package, Johnson played three matches amid struggles with a persistent back injury.
Johnson's arrival at CSK was significantly delayed as he was recovering from the injury. Despite the franchise giving him three matches, the left-arm pacer looked far from his best, scalping two wickets at an economy of 10.18.
Thus, the fitness setback not only limited Spencer Johnson's appearances but also affected his performance in the IPL 2026. Therefore, the Australian left-arm pacer could be another player whom CSK might show the exit door due to fitness concerns.
5. Khaleel Ahmed
Left-arm fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed struggled to get going in the IPL 2026. The Rajasthan pacer bagged two wickets in five matches before getting ruled out of the tournament due to a right quadricep injury.
It was later revealed that he would need 10-12 weeks to recover from the fitness setback. Khaleel's injury unsettled the Super Kings squad, and if he fails the fitness assessment test, the left-arm pacer might miss out on CSK's retention list for IPL 2027.
