CSK planning to release Prashant Veer [Source: AFP]
The IPL 2027 mini auction will take place on December 16 in Goa, and ahead of the marquee event, all ten franchises will announce their retention list. The five-time IPL winners, CSK, have already started their planning, and they are reportedly planning to release Prashant Veer to free up funds for the auction.
CSK bought Veer for a whopping 14.2 crores in the IPL 2026 auction, and the player failed to live up to the hype, scoring just 90 runs in six matches and failing to take a single wicket in IPL 2026.
Prashant Veer likely to be released, Kartik Sharma to be retained
CSK acquired Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma for the same price (14.2 crores), and according to a report by Cricbuzz, the franchise is likely to release Veer, while Kartik Sharma could be retained ahead of the IPL mini auction.
According to the report, the franchise felt Veer was not a good value for money, but the same cannot be said about Kartik. The 20-year-old batter from Rajasthan scored 295 runs in 11 matches, and he had a better season than Veer.
However, the Cricbuzz report mentioned that no official decision has been taken on retentions and releases as CSK aims to revamp their squad.
Releasing Prashant Veer could generate significant funds for CSK
CSK currently have 2.4 crores in its purse, with an annual increment of 5 crores to its salary cap, which takes their budget for the auction to 7.4 crores.
However, releasing Veer, who was acquired for 14.2 crores, could generate more funds for the mini auction, as the franchise has plenty of loopholes that the management is aiming to fix before the IPL 2027 season.
If Veer indeed gets released, CSK’s budget will shoot up to 21.6 crores, and that could significantly help them to improve the squad.
Currently, the Yellow Army needs a solid finisher, someone who can replace MS Dhoni in the long run. Moreover, they do need a destructive middle-order batter.
Apart from this, the franchise also lacks depth in the bowling department, and hence, the team is planning to increase its budget.
