CSK to enter IPL 2027 without batting coach [Source: AFP]
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise will not have a batting coach in the IPL 2027 season next year. In such a case, they will be the only team that will head into the 20th edition of the tournament without a batting coach.
Notably, the CSK franchise recently announced a new coaching support staff, after having named Zaheer Khan as new head coach of the team.
CSK CEO confirms team will not have a batting coach in IPL 2027
The CSK franchise recently parted ways with former Australian cricketer Michael Hussey, who had been serving the team as its batting coach since the 2018 edition of the tournament.
It now appears that the CSK management is not on the lookout for Hussey’s replacement, as confirmed by CEO Kasi Viswanathan.
While speaking with Sportstar just a day after CSK announced its complete coaching staff, Viswanathan said, “Our coaching staff is complete. Whoever we announced yesterday will form our backroom team; we will not have a batting coach.”
It is worth noting that while CSK will not have a definitive batting coach in IPL 2027 next year, the franchise has appointed Surrey legend Gareth Batty as its second assistant coach.
Kasi Viswanathan claimed that the franchise is also intending to use Batty in a batting advisor role. Claiming that it was head coach Zaheer Khan’s decision of not appointing a batting coach, the CEO said, “we are exploring the option of using Batty as a batting mentor. Discussions are ongoing.”
CSK announce Zaheer Khan’s complete coaching staff for IPL 2027
Just a few weeks ago, CSK parted ways with longtime head coach Stephen Fleming and batting coach Michael Hussey.
While the franchise has since appointed Zaheer Khan as Fleming’s replacement, they will not be appointing any batting coach for the IPL 2027 season, even though former players like Ambati Rayudu and Suresh Raina were reportedly in consideration for the high-profile role.
However, earlier this week, the franchise did announce CSK’s entire coaching staff for Zaheer. Fellow former cricketers Mohit Sharma and Albie Morkel were named as team’s new bowling coach and assistant coach respectively.
Apart from Morkel and Gareth Batty, the CSK also retained Sridharan Sriram as its assistant coach.
Notably, Sriram and James Foster were the only coaching staff members who were retained by the franchise from last season, with the latter of the two set to reprise his role as fielding coach.
While CSK is the only team that will enter IPL 2027 without a batting coach, the decision may not necessarily be a major concern, considering the high-scoring nature of recent IPL seasons and the wealth of experience already present in the dressing room, including that of former captain MS Dhoni.
