The Chennai Super Kings suffered a huge setback, with their prominent fast bowler Nathan Ellis getting ruled out of the IPL 2026 due to injury. Ellis was retained by CSK ahead of the IPL 2026 mega auction for INR 2 crores.

Despite showcasing remarkable death-bowling skills for Australia, Nathan Ellis couldn't get enough opportunities for CSK due to the presence of Matheesha Pathirana. So, with the Sri Lankan superstar joining KKR, Ellis was expected to spearhead the Super Kings' bowling attack alongside Khaleel Ahmed and Matt Henry.

Nathan Ellis ruled out of IPL 2026, CSK CEO confirms

During his conversation with Sportstar, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that the Super Kings are searching for Nathan Ellis' replacement, with a hamstring injury sidelining the Australian pacer from the IPL 2026

β€œIt is a big blow for us. Ellis is a crucial bowler, especially in the death overs. We are looking at replacements,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

Nathan Ellis has played 17 IPL matches, scalping 19 wickets in the tournament. He has an impressive strike rate of 19.89, showcasing his ability to strike at crucial junctures.

Ellis recently emerged as one of the rare positives for Australia in an otherwise horrendous T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. The right-arm pacer scalped five wickets, including a four-wicket haul, at a superb economy rate of 7.17.

With the likes of Matt Henry and Khaleel Ahmed set to bowl with the new ball, Ellis was supposed to be the go-to bowler for the five-time champions in the middle and death overs.

His ability to hit the deck hard and bamboozle the batters with deceptive cutters and slow balls. He brings a plethora of international experience to the table, and therefore, the Super Kings will truly feel his absence in the 2026 season.

How Nathan Ellis' injury could haunt Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026?

The Nathan Ellis injury could derail Chennai Super Kings' IPL 2026 preparations, as he was expected to be their go-to bowler in the middle and death overs.

Khaleel Ahmed and Mukesh Choudhary have poor economy rates of 11.05 and 13.87, respectively, in the slog overs, while Matt Henry is primarily a new-ball specialist.

In such a scenario, the Super Kings would be desperately searching for a potent death-bowling option, with Nathan Ellis injury ruling him out of the tournament.

Given that the Super Kings' bowling attack looked ordinary in the slog overs last year and a relatively more batting-friendly deck has been relaid at Chepauk, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side will certainly feel the absence of Ellis.

CSK IPL 2026 schedule

Under Ruturaj Gaikwad's leadership, Chennai Super Kings are scheduled to face the inaugural IPL edition champions, Rajasthan Royals, in their first match of the season on March 30.

According to the recently announced IPL schedule, the Super Kings will lock horns with Punjab Kings, RCB and Delhi Capitals in their subsequent matches on April 3, 5 and 11, respectively.
