Sanju Samson is preparing to begin an exciting new phase in his cricket career as the IPL 2026 season approaches. With only two weeks remaining before the tournament starts, the Indian opener is ready to represent a new franchise after his trade from Rajasthan Royals (RR) to Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
As a result, Samson will make his debut for CSK and wear the famous yellow jersey for the first time.
Sanju Samson steps into a new environment with CSK
For more than a decade, Sanju Samson remained closely connected with Rajasthan Royals. In fact, he represented the franchise for 11 seasons and gradually became one of the most recognisable faces of the team. During the past few years, he also served as the captain and played a key role in leading the side in several important matches.
Now, Samson steps into a completely new environment with CSK. Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad will continue as the captain of the team. As a result, Samson’s role in the playing XI has become a major topic of discussion among fans and cricket experts.
Anil Kumble speaks about leadership transition
Former Indian captain and IPL legend Anil Kumble shared his opinion on the decision made by CSK to bring Samson into the squad. Kumble believes Samson’s recent form and growing confidence make him a valuable addition to the CSK squad.
“Icons from one generation to another, the baton has passed on in Indian cricket, from Sunil Gavaskar to Sachin, then to Virat, with MS Dhoni also part of that era. You had the likes of Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly before the shift to MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, who still carry that aura and continue to perform. In that sense, Sanju coming in is a great move for CSK.
The icing on the cake is his fantastic form leading into the IPL and winning the World Cup for India with three back-to-back knocks,” Kumble said on CSK’s decision to bring in Samson.

Kumble explained that Samson could perfectly fit into a leadership support role similar to a vice-captain. His long experience as captain of Rajasthan Royals gives him the ability to guide the team whenever required.
"I think that’s the perfect role for Sanju, handling those responsibilities almost like a vice-captain. He has captained Rajasthan for a long period of time, so that leadership role comes naturally to him, and that’s something CSK will be looking for.
Last year, when Ruturaj was injured, MS had to take over, and previously, when Ravindra Jadeja was also captain, MS Dhoni came back in as captain midway through the season," he said.
"So there have been some challenges in identifying who the next captain would be for MS. Ruturaj was identified, and it is good that he continues as captain despite Sanju coming into the scheme of things. I wouldn’t be surprised if MS Dhoni gives Sanju the keeping role at some point during the season. He will be part of the leadership group, and in case if Ruturaj is unavailable due to injury or otherwise, Sanju would probably take over rather than MS,” Kumble said.
Sanju Samson's IPL captaincy experience
It is important to note that Sanju Samson also brings valuable captaincy experience from his time with Rajasthan Royals. He led the team in 67 matches. During this period, the side won 33 matches and lost 32. In addition, one match ended in a tie and another finished with no result. Overall, his winning percentage stands at 49.25.
Meanwhile, CSK will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Rajasthan Royals on March 30 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
