The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise has inadvertently dropped a massive update regarding the potential return of MS Dhoni. Prior to the ongoing IPL 2026 season, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter was ruled out of CSK squad for a couple of weeks owing to a calf strain.
However, it has been nearly a month since the launch of the tournament and Dhoni is yet to play a single game for his franchise. His absence seems to be affecting CSK’s fortunes big time as they are currently languishing in the bottom half of the IPL 2026 points table.
MS Dhoni looks in good nick behind the stumps, to likely return soon
MS Dhoni took part in the CSK training session alongside his teammates on Tuesday, April 21. The franchise itself shared a short video of the same on social media, where the legendary wicketkeeper-batter can be spotted keeping the wickets, and even pulling off a smart stumping.

Dhoni’s recent wicketkeeping recital indicates that the 44-year-old is in good shape at the moment, and his return to the CSK playing XI is imminent.

What happened to MS Dhoni?
Back in late March, the CSK franchise confirmed that MS Dhoni will have to miss the first couple of weeks of the IPL 2026 season. The franchise stated that the former skipper is suffering from a calf strain, and is not fully fit to take field for the team.
However, Dhoni has since missed CSK’s first six matches of the tournament, spanning the opening three weeks since the launch of the season.
When will MS Dhoni return to CSK playing XI?
As per latest reports, there is still no confirmed date about the return of MS Dhoni into the CSK playing XI. He is currently with the CSK squad in Mumbai as the team prepares to take on hosts Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, April 23.
Batting coach Michael Hussey, however, has given a positive update about the former Indian cricketer. Hussey claimed that Dhoni is making good progress in his rehabilitation and is batting comfortably in the nets.
The CSK coach said “He's progressing nicely with his rehab, and I'm happy with how he's batting. He just needs to build confidence in his running and improve his speed. I don't know when he'll play, but I'm hoping it's sooner rather than later, like all the fans.”
CSK in must-win scenario against Mumbai Indians
CSK, under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad, started off the IPL 2026 season with three straight defeats upfront. The team gained some positive momentum with comprehensive wins against the Delhi Capitals and KKR.
However, CSK got its newfound winning streak hampered once again, this time by the SRH on April 18 last weekend in Hyderabad. With two wins and four defeats from six matches, they are currently placed number eight on the IPL 2026 points table with a dismal NRR of -0.780.
In a bid to remain in contention for the playoffs, it is imperative for CSK to overcome arch-rivals Mumbai Indians on April 23.
