In a significant development, Matthew Hayden-backed Glasgow Cosmic is set to name Scotland’s George Munsey as their captain for ETPL 2026. CREX has learnt that Munsey will lead the side for the inaugural season of the European T20 Premier League, starting on August 26.

Notably, five of the six teams had already revealed their leaders, and Glasgow Cosmic were the only franchise left to have kept their fans guessing.

George Munsey to be named Glasgow captain Ahead of Richie Berrington

Glasgow Cosmic squad is filled with leaders, which also explains the delay. However, the Cosmic have put their faith on George Munsey’s experience as Scotland veteran. Interestingly, Glasgow went ahead with George Munsey despite Scotland’s current T20I captain Richie Berrington being available in the mix.

For the unversed, Matthew Hayden, who is the co-owner of Glasgow Cosmic will also serve as the head coach, while Matthew Mott has been named as the assistant coach.

Glasgow Cosmic Picks In-Form George Munsey As Captain

Interestingly, Munsey has never led Scotland in his career. However, Glasgow Cosmic has went ahead with the 33-year-old as their captain. Notably, the franchise chose experience over leadership skills.

Munsey made his international debut in 2015 and has been Scotland's second leading run-getter across formats behind Richie Berrington. In 163 innings, George Munsey has scored 5375 runs, averaging 36.31.

However, in T20Is, Munsey has a slight edge over Berrington, amassing 2598 runs in 86 innings, averaging 32.07. Hence, Glasgow Cosmic thought of the 33-year-old as their captain ahead of Berrington.

Now, with Cosmic's decision, all six franchises have decided their captains for ETPL 2026. Here is the list.

  • Irish Wolves – Glenn Maxwell
  • Dublin Guardians - Ravi Ashwin
  • Rotterdam Dockers - Faf Du Plessis
  • Amsterdam Flames – Mitch Marsh
  • Edinburgh Castle Rockers – Mitch Santner
  • Glasgow Cosmic - George Munsey

Notably, Munsey is the only Scottish player to lead a side in ETPL 2026, rather the only player from associate nation to lead the team.

Michael Leask Heaps Massive Praise On George Munsey Ahead Of ETPL 2026

Ahead of ETPL 2026, Munsey's national teammate Michael Leask sat down for an interview with CREX where he heaped massive praise on George Munsey.

"Someone like a George Munsey who's been so good around the associate game. Someone who's been around other tournaments. Who's been to the likes of the PSL, been to a bit of the Caribbean Premier League and other things like that. I think George is going to be a huge asset," remarked Leask about George Munsey speaking to CREX.

Shedding light on Munsey's recent performance, the 33-year-old took part in England One-Day Cup, where he scored 175 runs in three innings, averaging 58.33. It included a century. Further, he had a great T20 Blast as well, amassing 500 runs in 14 innings.
