England head coach Brendon McCullum has opened up about his future plans with the national team following Ben Stokes' retirement.
Notably, England cricket has entered a new chapter after Ben Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket. The experienced all-rounder, who also served as England’s Test captain, surprised fans with his decision during Day 4 of 3rd Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge on Sunday.
Over the years, Stokes played a major role in England’s success with both his bat and ball. Moreover, his courageous leadership helped shape the team’s modern approach to Tests.
Brendon McCullum Shares England’s Future Vision
Following Ben Stokes’ retirement, Brendon McCullum spoke about his future with the Three Lions.
Although losing a player like Stokes is a major setback, McCullum made it clear that his confidence in English cricket remains strong. Notably, after England lost the Test series against New Zealand, criticism was directed toward him, with many calling for his resignation.
However, McCullum shared his future plans, effectively shutting down rumours of his sacking.
Speaking to Sky Sports, McCullum said, “My enthusiasm for English cricket and my commitment to English cricket has never wavered.
I’ve got a firm belief in the direction that this team can go. We still have an identity about us, but we want to continue to furnish and harness that, to get us in a direction that we are the team that we want to be, and that we want to represent for the people of this country.”
Notably, McCullum’s comments suggest that England will continue building around their existing style while also looking to improve and evolve.

Brendon McCullum’s Journey As England Head Coach
For the unversed, Brendon McCullum became England’s Test head coach in 2022. Later, from January 2025, he also took charge of the white-ball teams. Since his appointment, he has played a key role in changing England’s mindset and encouraging an aggressive brand of cricket.
Furthermore, McCullum signed a contract extension in September 2024, keeping him with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) until the end of the 2027 Ashes.
It is important to note that when Brendon McCullum and Stokes joined forces, they introduced the attacking style of cricket known as “Bazball.” Initially, the approach brought exciting victories and received praise.
However, things have changed over the last couple of years. As pitches became more challenging and opposition teams adapted, England’s all-out attacking strategy started producing inconsistent results. Consequently, the team has struggled to maintain its early success.
England's Test Record Under Brendon McCullum
Since 2024, the English team has won 14 Tests but lost 15, which shows that their performances have become less consistent.
Overall, Brendon McCullum has guided England in 48 Tests, winning 27 and losing 19. Although these numbers remain respectable, England have slipped behind several top teams in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings.
For context, England are currently languishing in seventh place for the 2025–27 WTC cycle, just ahead of West Indies and bottom-placed Pakistan.
Following the Test series against New Zealand. England's road to redemption will continue with a three-match home series against Pakistan, followed by a demanding assignment against South Africa in December.
