Shreyas Iyer's T20I captaincy began on a disappointing note as India suffered a shocking 2-0 series defeat to Ireland during their UK tour. It was Iyer's first assignment as India's T20I captain after taking over from Suryakumar Yadav, and the result has already brought criticism.
Despite the poor start, Iyer entered the role with an impressive leadership record in T20 cricket. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL 2024 title and led Punjab Kings to IPL 2025 final.
Although PBKS narrowly missed the playoffs this season, Shreyas Iyer enjoyed a fine campaign with the bat, scoring 498 runs in 14 matches, including his maiden IPL century.
India's Historic Defeat Against Ireland
India's defeat to Ireland ranks among the biggest upsets of 2026. In the first T20I, India were bowled out for just 148 runs before losing by 34 runs.
Just two days after, India lost the 2nd T20I by just 1 run and handed Ireland a memorable series victory.
The result ended India's streak of 16 consecutive T20I series wins. It was also India's first T20I series defeat in 3 years and their first bilateral T20I series loss since going down to West Indies in 2023. More importantly, it marked India's first-ever T20I series defeat against Ireland.
Who Was The Last Indian Captain To Lose A Debut T20I Series?
It is important to note that Shreyas Iyer is not the first Indian captain to lose a T20I series in his first assignment. Before him, only Shikhar Dhawan had suffered the same fate.
Notably, Dhawan became India's T20I captain during the 2021 tour of Sri Lanka while the senior Test squad was touring England. India started brilliantly by winning the opening match and looked set to seal the series.
However, a COVID-19 outbreak within the Indian camp changed everything. Nine frontline players were ruled out after being forced into isolation, leaving Dhawan with a severely weakened squad. India had to field a makeshift playing XI featuring four debutants and only five specialist batters.
Sri Lanka took full advantage of the situation, winning the 2nd T20I by 4 wickets before sealing the series with a seven-wicket victory in the decider.
The 2-1 defeat remains Dhawan's only series as India T20I captain and also gave Sri Lanka their first bilateral series win over India across formats since 2008.

Other Indian Captains Who Could Not Win Their Debut Series
Although only Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer have lost their debut T20I series as India's captain, two other players also failed to win their first assignment but avoided defeat.
Ajinkya Rahane led India in Zimbabwe in 2015, where the two-match series ended 1-1 after both teams won one game each.
Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant also endured a difficult start against South Africa at home in 2022. India lost the opening two matches before bouncing back to level the series 2-2. The deciding fifth T20I was washed out because of rain, allowing India to avoid a series defeat.
Talking about the current Indian team, after the disappointing Ireland tour, India will now face England in a five-match T20I series.
Following a difficult start to his captaincy, Shreyas Iyer will be hoping to quickly put the Ireland disappointment behind him and lead India back to winning ways against a much stronger English side.
