Former Punjab Kings coach Wasim Jaffer has been roped in by the Hyderabad domestic cricket team. The former India cricketer, who is widely known for his expertise in batting techniques, will be watching over the domestic team for the next two years, starting this season.
As for his appointment, Wasim Jaffer will be working closely with the coaching staff of Hyderabad, whose appointments are yet to be made final for this season, with T. Ravi Teja being the head coach last year.
Jaffer And His Significant Coaching Stints Over The Years
Wasim Jaffer, now 48 years old, has played 31 Tests and two ODI matches for India and is one of the most experienced players in the domestic coaching unit.
He is the top scorer in Indian domestic cricket history, and he also previously coached Uttarakhand while serving as the batting consultant to the Vidarbha team.
He served as the batting coach of PBKS for two stints. He was roped in back in 2019-21 and was recalled in 2023 under Trevor Bayliss as well to serve as the batting coach for the still trophyless IPL team.
Besides his Punjab Kings stint in the IPL, he has also worked with the Bangladesh national cricket team before getting roped in by Hyderabad. Earlier in 2021, he signed a two-year deal with Odisha as the head coach to take responsibility for the team’s development.
Although no significant trophies or results have come Jaffer’s way, his experience as a veteran and a mentor is something that the domestic cricket teams long for.
Wasim Jaffer Appointment In Hyderabad Confirmed
While speaking to Cricbuzz, a senior official of the Hyderabad Cricket Association confirmed the development of Jaffer's appointment.
"It is almost finalised, pending a few technicalities. We should formally announce the decision tomorrow (June 30)," HCA secretary T Basavaraju told CricBuzz.
The former Punjab Kings coach too shared his confirmation on the role as the director of cricket for the Hyderabad Cricket Association, Ambati Rayudu, seems to have influenced his appointment, as shared by an HCA official.
"Clearly, it is a decision taken by Rayudu, who has been authorised to make calls on cricketing matters," the HCA official shared.

Hyderabad Looking Forward To Ending Disappointing Domestic Run
Hyderabad, the two-time Ranji Trophy champions, has not been a dominant force in domestic cricket in recent years.
After finishing fourth in Elite Group B of the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, they ended up being second in Super League Group B, as they missed out on the final on net run rate to eventual runners-up Haryana.
In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the team finished sixth in Group B and failed to qualify for the quarter-finals. With Wasim Jaffer's appointment, the team would like to turn around its bitter times to become a much more polished team over the next two years.
