England were in shambles when the ECB decided to revamp their Test side, and their first big decision was to appoint the New Zealand great, Brendon McCullum as their new red-ball coach. The decision was met with heavy criticism, but soon, the Kiwi legend became everyone’s fan-favourite through his innovative ideas.

It has been four years since McCullum took over as the England Test coach, and he reinvented their style of play, defined by aggression and a positive mindset, and the English media termed this as “Bazball.”

Ben Stokes replaced Joe Root as the Test skipper, and together, he and McCullum built a roadmap for English success. The Bazball style of play worked for a brief period of time, and England was the most exciting team to watch in cricket, but the honeymoon phase soon ended, and the side got exposed.

(McCullum as head coach in first 19 Tests)

  • The perfect honeymoon period for England and McCullum started with 14 wins out of the first 19 matches, with only four losses suffered. The plan to play an aggressive style of play, irrespective of the situation, worked wonders.
  • The team had a clear match strategy, and each player understood the assignment as England had successful wins against New Zealand, South Africa, and Pakistan.

Phase 2: Since the start of 2024

  • The wonderful winning phase continued till 2023, but since the start of 2024, things have gone downhill for the Stokes-McCullum pair, as the side has suffered crushing series defeats against Pakistan, India, and Australia, and has yet to taste success against a top Test-playing opposition.
  • Since 2024, the side has won 14 Tests, and have lost 15 matches, meaning they have lost more than they have won in the last two years.
  • Overall, in 48 Test matches, McCullum has won 27 Tests as England head coach, and has lost 19 matches, as the team has gone from the most exciting red-ball team to one of the easiest opponents in two years' time.

McCullum's poor Test record against India and Australia

In the current era, India and Australia are considered two of the best Test-playing nations, and against them, Brendon McCullum and England boast a poor track record.

In early 2024, England travelled to India and lost the away series, 1-4, as the Three Lions were dismantled by Rohit Sharma’s men. Prior to that, England drew The Ashes 2023, 2-2 against Australia.

In the summer of 2025, an inexperienced Indian side visited the English shores, and McCullum’s men failed to beat them as the riveting series ended, 2-2. The final nail in the coffin was The Ashes 2025-26, and England, as expected, suffered a drubbing, losing 1-4.

Overall, against India and Australia, McCullum has won just 6 Tests, and has lost 12 games, showcasing his vulnerability against top sides.

England's poor record in WTC cycle

The second cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) started in 2021, and McCullum became England’s coach in 2022. In his first season, he helped England finish fourth, but missed out on a berth in the finale.

However, things went downhill from the following season, as the Three Lions struggled and finished fifth in WTC 2023-25.

If that was not enough, then England currently occupies seventh spot in the WTC table, and with points docked against New Zealand, the side is almost out of the race to reach the finals.

The 44-year-old became the head coach in 2022, and in three cycles, England’s position has crumbled in WTC cycle as other teams have progressed, and they have regressed.

Should England sack McCullum before it gets too late?

Merely playing an exciting brand of cricket is not important for a coach; he also has to show results, and McCullum has failed to do so in his tenure. A lot was promised when the Kiwi was appointed by the ECB, but with every passing year, the side has regressed, and the WTC table reflects the story.

On paper, England are almost out of the WTC 2025-27 finale race, and they have nothing to lose now. Hence, the ECB should pull the trigger and sack McCullum before it gets too late.
