Zimbabwe have suffered a major setback in the T20 World Cup 2026 after veteran batter Brendan Taylor was ruled out due to a hamstring injury. The experienced wicketkeeper picked up the problem during the opening match against Oman in Colombo.
Though Zimbabwe won comfortably, concerns around Taylor’s fitness persisted. Captain Sikandar Raza had earlier hinted that the injury looked serious. Now, medical reports have confirmed that Taylor will miss the remainder of the tournament. Zimbabwe have roped in Ben Curran as his replacement.
Brendan Taylor ruled out, confirms Sikandar Raza
The issue happened when Brendan Taylor was batting well against Oman before he started struggling while running between the wickets. He looked uncomfortable.
Soon after, he retired hurt. Captain Sikandar Raza immediately signalled him to walk off. Raza later said he did not want Taylor to worsen the injury.
After scans and medical checks, Raza confirmed that the 40-year-old will not take further part in the T20 World Cup 2026.
"We don't get a lot of bilateral against them. ICC has given us the opportunity and we will look to make the most of it and play good cricket. We have got two changes. Brendan Taylor picked up an injury and he has been ruled out of the tournament. Ngarava misses out," Sikandar Raza said during the toss.
It is a big blow, as Taylor is one of the most experienced players in the squad. Brendan Taylor has been a key figure in Zimbabwe cricket for many years.
This was not the first time he had retired hurt recently. In fact, it was the third time in his last five T20 innings. That made the situation more worrying.
Raza had admitted after the Oman match that Taylor’s first reaction was, “I think it’s bad.” That fear has now become reality.
Zimbabwe will now have to adjust quickly. Losing a senior batter in the middle of a World Cup campaign is never easy.
Clinical win against Oman overshadowed
The injury news took attention away from what was otherwise a strong performance. Zimbabwe dominated Oman in their opening match. The bowlers did the early damage.
Blessing Muzarabani led the attack with 3 for 16. Richard Ngarava picked up 3 for 17. Brad Evans also chipped in with 3 for 18 as Oman were bowled out for just 103.
Zimbabwe then chased the target calmly. They reached 104/2 in just 13.3 overs. Brian Bennett played a solid knock of 48 not out, while Brendan Taylor had made 31 before walking off injured.
Big test ahead against Australia
Zimbabwe now face a tougher challenge. They take on Australia next. It will be a big match. Taylor’s experience would have been valuable in such a contest.
There are backup wicketkeeping options in the squad. Tadiwanashe Marumani will step in with the gloves. But replacing Taylor’s calm presence and batting knowledge will not be simple.
Zimbabwe have lost and will have to bat first. Australia, meanwhile, are also led by Travis Head due to Mitchell Marsh’s injury.
Overall, in tournaments like the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, momentum matters. Zimbabwe started well. Now they must respond to adversity just as strongly. The campaign continues, but without one of their most trusted stars.
