USA player seeks ICC and Jay Shah's help [Source: AFP]The ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has been a remarkable edition that marks inclusivity. From Nepal to Italy, the rise and growth of associate nations have been remarkable this year. The sudden growth, though, was not something that came out of the blue; ICC chair Jay Shah’s tenure can be seen as a big benefactor here.Adding to the inclusivity of associate nations however was Pakistan-based USA cricketer Shayan Jahangir, who blurted a cry for help to Jay Shah to look up to his nation for further development and better inclusivity on the world stage. Shayan Jahangir Demands Help From ICC Chair Jay Shah Notably, ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, the United States of America cricket team was playing in the Cricket World Cup League Two qualifiers and had warm-up matches with India A and New Zealand. Previously, in January, they faced teams like Ireland, and their 2025 calendar of T20I games was packed with Bangladesh, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc., calling out this lack of inclusivity where the USA has been ignored by SENA countries and even India as well. Shayan Jahangir personally asked ICC Chairman Jay Shah, making a direct request that they are looking forward to playing against bigger teams instead of just playing against Sri Lanka A. "See, especially coming into this tournament, all major teams have played big T20 series. Pakistan played against Australia, New Zealand played against India, and we were playing against Sri Lanka A. It has a lot to do with the funding as well,” Shayan Jahangir said in a pre-match press conference. Financial Crisis And Structural Instability In USA Cricket It is not a surprise that USA cricket has been struggling with hardships lately. As of 2026, the official governing body of USA Cricket is in a state of severe instability. The ICC's suspension in September 2025 due to serious breaches of membership criteria has led the USA down a difficult path. USAC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in late 2025, and as part of the structural reorganization, it was revealed that the body is dealing with negative cash flow and hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. While Major League Cricket has been a successful private professional league in the country, the nation’s growth in particular has been at a crossroads. Jahangir Seeks Financial Help Seeking help, Pakistan-based USA cricketer Shayan Jahangir personally requested funding from the ICC, as he appealed for support while promising talent in associate cricket as witnessed in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. “We don't have the money to have those comps [competitions], don't have those big grounds that we can play on, and I think if we have that funding from the ICC... It's a request from us, personally from me, to really look into it, and if you really nurture us, I'm telling you, there's so much talent in Associate cricket," Shayan Jahangir added. Jay Shah’s Role In Empowering Associate Nations Adding to this, USA’s request might be heard by Jay Shah himself. Since the beginning of his tenure as ICC Chairman in December 2024, Jay Shah has been voicing policies aimed at empowering associate members by increasing financial distributions and promoting global expansion. Notably, Jay Shah played a pivotal role in the construction of the new Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek. He also approved a nearly 10% increase in fund distribution for associate members for the year 2026 to support more balanced growth. As part of the ICC Olympics working group, Jay Shah was also instrumental in leading cricket into the LA 2028 Olympic Games. Hence, Jay Shah's contributions to associate nations have been significant, and the USA's cry for help in the T20 World Cup 2026 could be a call he might not ignore.
