Just days ahead of India tour of Ireland, security-related concerns have erupted in the country, forcing the cricket board to spring into action. This major development has cast dark clouds on the future of the series.

India recently beat Afghanistan in a one-off Test by an innings and 300 runs. The tour still consists of a three-game ODI series after which the T20I team will travel to Ireland for a 2-game series.

Ireland to review security before India series

That being said, the 2-game T20I series between India and Ireland is set to take place on June 26 and 28. However, in Northern Ireland, unrest has erupted due to riots, attacks on police and racial attacks.

The disturbances reportedly began after a knife attack in Belfast and escalated into wider public disorder.

In response, the police retaliated by throwing water cannons and plastic bullets at the protesters. Not only that, the authorities have made over a dozen arrests in the matter as well.

Now, with the India tour of Ireland just a couple of weeks away, the Ireland Cricket Board issued a statement, saying it is monitoring the ongoing unrest and community violence in parts of the country and will decide within 48 hours whether this weekend's domestic cup matches can go ahead safely.

The statement specifically referred to Irish Senior Cup and National Cup fixtures, but it immediately raised questions about whether the unrest could affect international fixtures if the situation worsens.

What if the crisis worsens in Ireland?

Meanwhile, in case the security situation doesn’t improve in Ireland, the board may consider venue changes, additional security measures, or, in an extreme scenario, postponement.

While the tour consists of only two games, it is extremely crucial for Ireland as it generates a huge crowd and significant revenue. Hence, it’s important for Cricket Ireland to address the matter urgently and ensure the security protocols for the Indian team are airtight.

The first T20I will take place on June 26 in Belfast, meaning Ireland has enough time to resolve the matter so that cricket remains unaffected.

India’s squad for Ireland tour

Meanwhile, India have finalised its preparations for the Ireland tour, as the BCCI announced the squad last week. Shreyas Iyer will begin his captaincy era officially with this tour, thus replacing Suryakumar Yadav.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi received his maiden call-up while Tilak Varma was appointed as vice-captain. Harshit Rana makes his return after a long injury layoff, while Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya have been rested due to workload management.

Prince Yadav also got a call-up after an impressive IPL 2026 season and a decent domestic season.
