Bangladesh Wins An ODI Series Vs Australia [Source: AFP]
In what turned out to be a historic day at Mirpur, Bangladesh beat Australia by 5 wickets in the second ODI to seal a series victory for the first time against the Aussies in the history of ODI cricket.
With a 1-0 lead in the series, Bangladesh had to bowl first in the second ODI. But Australia regretted their decision to bat first as three top-order batters, Matthew Short, Cooper Connolly and Matt Renshaw, were dismissed for a duck each.
Australia were 0/3 at the end of the first 2 overs. Still, they managed to put up 187 runs on the board. The match was massively impacted by rain as the chase got reduced to 41 overs, and Bangladesh’s revised DLS target was 192 runs.
Bangladesh script history vs Australia
While Bangladesh suffered an early blow in Tanzid Tamim, who was dismissed on a 2-ball duck, the hosts picked themselves up with an 86-run partnership between Soumya Sarkar (42) and Najmul Shanto (41).
Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy also made crucial runs on the board to steady the chase. The chase was always under Bangladesh’s control, and eventually, they won the second ODI by 5 wickets by chasing the target in 35 overs.
With that win, Bangladesh secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 3-game series to win their first-ever ODI series against Australia.
This is also only the third time in these past several decades that Bangladesh have managed to beat Australia in the ODI format. Needless to say, it was a historic effort, and the hosts celebrated their achievement with pride.

What went wrong with Australia?
For Australia, the second ODI began with early disaster when they lost three wickets with zero runs on the board. From there, Short and Connolly rebuilt the innings, but it was never going to be enough.
With the ball, Australia failed to capitalise on the early momentum after dismissing Tanzid on a duck. They let Sarkar and Shanto build a match-defining partnership.
Riley Meredith conceded 50 runs in just 6 overs while Adam Zampa also leaked 42 runs. Xavier Bartlett, Meredith, Zampa, Renshaw and Cameron Green picked a wicket each.
But Bangladesh’s coach was steady. They completed the chase by earning every single run and wrapped up the match in just 35 overs to script history.
Bangladesh extend their dominance
The ODI series victory against Australia is a massive moment in Bangladesh’s cricket history. After spending decades as an underdog, the Tigers found their way back by beating Pakistan in an away Test series.
Despite the setback of missing the T20 World Cup 2026, Bangladesh continued to work hard and again whitewashed Pakistan in a Test series, but this time at home, that too, for the first time in the two countries’ Test rivalry.
Now, their red-ball form has extended into white-ball. By beating Australia, Bangladesh have raised the bar for themselves. This series victory will serve as a stepping stone for Bangladesh’s upcoming potential rise in ODI cricket, possibly a better campaign in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
