Ben Stokes is all set to return to franchise cricket after stepping away from international cricket. The former England captain is expected to feature in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL), which will be his first league appearance since retiring from international cricket.

Notably, Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket on June 28, confirming that the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge would be the final match of his international career.

Now, with no international commitments, Stokes has the freedom to play in franchise leagues around the world. As a result, several T20 teams have shown interest in signing the experienced all-rounder.

Ben Stokes To Join BBL After International Retirement

According to Code Sports, Cricket Australia officials are becoming increasingly confident that Ben Stokes will play in the 2026-27 Big Bash League. Moreover, multiple BBL franchises are interested in signing him, with the Sydney Sixers currently leading the race.

Initially, there was uncertainty over whether Stokes would spend Christmas with his family in England or travel to Australia for BBL. 

Notably, there was also speculation that he might skip the tournament and instead prepare for the SA20 league, which begins in mid-January after England's Test series against South Africa.

However, recent reports suggest that Stokes is now leaning towards playing at least a part of the BBL season. 

Although player signings are currently on hold due to ongoing discussions between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers' Association regarding updated player list rules, league officials remain hopeful that a deal will be completed soon.

Sydney Sixers Interested To Sign Ben Stokes

Furthermore, Sydney Sixers have emerged as the favourites to secure his signature. One of the main reasons behind this is the appointment of former England white-ball coach Matthew Mott as the Sixers' new head coach.

Interestingly, Mott and Stokes shared a successful partnership during England's victorious 2022 T20 World Cup campaign. Their strong working relationship could play an important role in convincing the all-rounder to join the Sydney-based franchise.

In addition, with the overseas player draft expected to be scrapped, overseas stars like Stokes will be allowed to sign directly with franchises. Reports suggest these contracts could be worth more than $300,000, making the BBL an attractive option for international players.

Ben Stokes' Previous BBL Record

Although it has been several years since Ben Stokes last featured in BBL, he is no stranger to the competition. Notably, he previously represented Melbourne Renegades more than a decade ago.

During his earlier BBL stint, Stokes scored 128 runs in four innings at an impressive strike rate of 156. Along with his contributions with the bat, he also picked up 3 wickets.

Apart from BBL, Stokes has played in several major T20 competitions, including IPL, Vitality Blast and The Hundred. Across 162 T20 innings, the England legend has scored 3,027 runs while also taking 93 wickets.
