A brawl during the after-hours in London led to Ben Stokes’ sudden retirement from international cricket, even though the once-in-a-generation all-rounder is currently featuring for Durham in the domestic One-Day Cup.
Stokes' retirement has created a void in England's Test setup; the national selectors need to find his successor to lead the English side, alongside a genuine all-rounder. That said, the ECB ended its ties with head coach Brendon McCullum in the longest format.
Andrew McDonald predicts reversal of Ben Stokes' retirement
While predicting a potential U-turn in Ben Stokes' retirement, Australian head coach Andrew McDonald has stated that Brendon McCullum's successor will look to bring the all-rounder back for one last time for the next Ashes, which is scheduled for 2027.
Furthermore, the Australian coach has hinted at a fairytale ending to Stokes' career with a reverse in retirement, which would be great for the promotion of the Ashes 2027.
“I don’t know. I think the fairytale would be that he (Ben Stokes) comes back out of retirement and takes on one more Ashes and builds a lot of hype on the way in,” McDonald told SEN.
“So if you’re looking at promoting that series, that’s probably the angle that you would want that he come out of retirement."

“I think that whoever the new head coach that comes in potentially has a conversation with him. So we don’t know why Ben left," the Australian head coach said. "There might be an opportunity for that new head coach to potentially twist his arm and bring him back in."
That said, McDonald also mentioned that even if the former England captain doesn't return, he has had a wonderful career.
"But if it ends now, he’s had a wonderful career in terms of what he’s brought to the game, his impact in certain innings and moments in time, yeah, will age pretty well for him to look back on.
Ben Stokes' unmatched legacy
Retired after playing 122 Test matches, alongside 114 ODIs and 43 T20Is, Ben Stokes is undoubtedly one of the biggest match-winners to have donned an England shirt. The all-rounder was their hero in the final of both ICC titles in 2019 and 2021.
That said, Stokes’ most iconic innings came in Tests, especially against Australia. He slammed his maiden century in the Ashes 2013 on a lethal track in Perth against a hostile bowling attack.
However, he earned the tag of the Miracle Man when he won England the Headingley Test through his sheer brilliance, scoring an unbeaten 134 and putting on a remarkable last-wicket stand with Jack Leach.
Nevertheless, Stokes racked up 11,321 international runs and scalped over 300 wickets in a career that spanned close to 15 years.
Can Ben Stokes reverse his retirement?
Although Ben Stokes is still playing competitive cricket and has shown interest in playing in foreign leagues, he hasn't commented on reversing his international retirement.
When he called off his time, he said he no longer had the fight left in him. But there have been various incidents when iconic players have reversed their retirement, including Imran Khan, Javagal Srinath and Shahid Afridi, for a challenging series or a World Cup.
