After Announcing Stephen Fleming, England Denies Him Coaching vs Pakistan Tests

England have officially announced Stephen Fleming as the new head coach of their Test team following the departure of Brendon McCullum. 

The former New Zealand captain has been handed the responsibility of leading England's red-ball side after building an outstanding coaching career with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

However, despite his appointment, Fleming will not take charge during England's upcoming three-match Test series against Pakistan. Instead, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that an interim coach will lead the side before Fleming officially begins his tenure later this year.

Stephen Fleming To Take Charge From South Africa Test

It is important to note that former England opener Marcus Trescothick will serve as the interim head coach during the upcoming 3-match Test series against Pakistan. The series is scheduled to begin on August 19 at Headingley.

Although Stephen Fleming has already been appointed as England's Test coach, the 53-year-old will not be present for the Pakistan series. As a result, Trescothick will oversee the team's preparations and lead England throughout the assignment.

Meanwhile, Fleming is expected to officially take charge during England's one-off Test against South Africa, which is set to begin on December 17. That match will mark the start of his tenure as England's full-time Test coach.

Why Is There Delay In Stephen Fleming's Arrival?

According to ESPNcricinfo, Stephen Fleming is currently spending time with his family after ending his remarkable association with CSK. Following his departure from the IPL franchise earlier this month, he has decided to take a short break before beginning his new role with England.

Furthermore, Fleming is expected to arrive in UK later this summer to begin preparations for England's South Africa Test tour. 

It is important to note that the former New Zealand captain has signed a 4-year contract with the ECB, keeping him in charge of England's Test side until September 2030.

Marcus Trescothick's Coaching Journey

Notably, Marcus Trescothick brings plenty of experience to the role. During his playing career, the former left-handed opener represented England in 76 Tests, 123 ODIs and 3 T20Is.

After retiring from international cricket, he began his coaching career by joining Somerset as an assistant coach in November 2019. Later, in March 2021, he was promoted to the role of England's full-time batting coach.

In addition, Trescothick stepped in as England's interim white-ball head coach during the home series against Australia and West Indies in late 2024. Notably, he took charge after Matthew Mott's departure before Brendon McCullum assumed the coaching role.

Moreover, Trescothick also worked as the batting coach of Southern Brave during the 2025 season.

What Happened The Last Time Pakistan Played A Test series In England?

Notably, Pakistan last toured England for a Test series in August 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire three-match series was played at bio-secure venues, with the first Test held at Old Trafford, Manchester, while the remaining two matches took place at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton.

England won the opening Test by 3 wickets after a successful run chase. Meanwhile, the 2nd and 3rd Tests ended in draws. As a result, England secured the series 1-0.
