Pakistan have suffered a major setback ahead of the 2nd Test of the ongoing West Indies tour, as Shan Masood has been ruled out. Notably, the left-handed batter picked up the injury while batting during the first innings of the opening Test. 

The injury comes at a difficult time for Pakistan, who are already under pressure after losing the first Test by 90 runs. As a result, the visitors will now have to make changes to their batting lineup as they aim to level the 2-match series.

Shan Masood Ruled Out Of Second Test

Shan Masood has officially been ruled out of the 2nd Test after suffering a fractured finger. According to reports from Pakistan’s Samaa TV, doctors have advised the experienced batter to take complete rest in order to recover properly.

It is important to note that Masood injured his finger while batting in Pakistan’s first innings of the Trinidad Test. Even though he returned to bat later in the match, he was unable to come in at his usual No.3 position. Instead, he walked out at no 8 in 2d innings due to the discomfort.

Meanwhile, sources have suggested that Masood is expected to recover in time for Pakistan’s upcoming three-match Test series against England, which is scheduled to begin on August 19.

Pakistan’s Poor Start To West Indies Tour

Notably, Pakistan had a disappointing start to the tour after suffering a 90-run defeat in the first Test. Chasing a target of 211, the visitors were bowled out for just 120 runs.

Notably, Jayden Seales played a match-winning role for the West Indies as he picked up a brilliant five-wicket haul and dismantled Pakistan’s batting order. Moreover, Masood’s injury further weakened the batting unit during the important run chase.

Shan Masood’s Majestic Return To Form

Although Masood has been ruled out due to injury, he recently showed signs of returning to his best form. During the first Test against the West Indies, he scored a brilliant century on Day 3, ending a two-year wait for a Test ton.

Batting at No.3, Masood reached his seventh Test century in 163 balls and struck 11 elegant boundaries during his innings. Therefore, his injury comes as an unfortunate setback after a much-needed return to form.

Earlier, the PCB had removed Masood from the Test captaincy following a poor run of results. Under his leadership, Pakistan won only four of the 16 Tests played since December 2023, leading the board to appoint Babar Azam as the new captain.

Who Could Replace Shan Masood In 2nd Test vs West Indies?

With Masood unavailable for 2nd Test, Kamran Ghulam is expected to travel to West Indies as his replacement. In addition, reports suggest that he could also be included in Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming England Test series.

Notably, Kamran brings useful experience to the side, having played 6 Tests so far. He has scored 312 runs at an average of 28.36 and will now have an opportunity to strengthen Pakistan’s middle order if he gets a chance in the playing XI.
