In an important update, former Australian cricketer Matthew Mott has been appointed as the new head coach of the Sydney Sixers men's team in the BBL on a two-year contract. He will assume the role from the upcoming 2026-27 season.

As a result, he will step down as the head coach of the Sydney Sixers women's team in WBBL. The club plans to announce his replacement later this week.

Matthew Mott becomes the chief of Sydney Sixers

Having said that, the decision to appoint Matthew Mott as the head coach of Sydney Sixers comes after his predecessor James Hopes unexpectedly left the franchise.

Hopes was hired as Sixers' BBL head coach earlier this year. But just two months later, he returned to Queensland to become head coach of the Queensland Bulls and Brisbane Heat

Naturally, Mott, who worked as an assistant coach with the men's side last season, was chosen to take over since he knows the franchise in and out.

However, he will have to leave his WBBL duties since both seasons are played back-to-back. Moreover, future scheduling could overlap or change, which means managing both squads would be difficult and could affect continuity.

Therefore, the club opted for separate head coaches for the men's and women's teams, and Matthew Mott will transfer to the men’s team this year.

Matthew Mott reacts to his new role

Meanwhile, in an official statement, Matthew Mott said he was thrilled to become BBL head coach because he has been associated with the Sydney Sixers for a long time.

"I've been part of the Sixers family for a long time, so to have the opportunity to step into the BBL head coach role is something I'm incredibly excited about. This is a club with a proud history and a winning culture, and I'm looking forward to building on the foundations that have been established over many seasons," Mott said.

He also expressed disappointment at leaving the women's side and wished captain Ash Gardner, the players, and support staff all the best for the upcoming WBBL season

"While it's disappointing that I won't be able to continue as WBBL head coach, I'm incredibly grateful for my time with the women's program and wish Ash [Gardner], the players and support staff all the very best for WBBL12," he added.

Mott’s glorious coaching career

That being said, Matthew Mott is not an ordinary coach. As Australia Women's team’s head coach, he guided them to 2 T20 World Cup titles and the 2022 Women's ODI World Cup title.

Not only that, as England men’s team coach, Mott won the 2022 Men's T20 World Cup but left the role after England's disappointing campaigns in the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup.

Besides the BBL, Matthew Mott is a T20 consultant with Lancashire in English county cricket and head coach of the Manchester Super Giants women's team in The Hundred. In the IPL as well, Mott served as the assistant coach of Delhi Capitals in the 2025 season.
