In the cricket world, England has always been a formidable force, but in the last few years, the legendary dominance has been missing from the side. Even under the ‘Bazball’ era led by Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, the side has struggled to assert its authority consistently.
As England looked for a major turnaround under the captain-coach duo, the growing tension between them has raised eyebrows. Even though their focus remained on the betterment of English cricket, the visionary differences between them are sparking serious concerns.
McCullum raises big questions over Stokes’ captaincy
Over the years, England has been a cricket giant that showcased its excellence across the formats. Their solid defensive approach, mastery of swing, and powerful bowling once defined their strength, but in June 2022, everything changed with the arrival of an aggressive, attacking philosophy.
After Brendon McCullum was appointed as England’s coach, the ‘Bazball’ strategy was implemented in the Test format. As the longest format always tests patience, the England cricket invented a new side of it. The attacking philosophy of Ben Stokes and McCullum brought early success to the side.

Even after early success, England’s ‘Bazball’ strategy got a hit as their recent slump in the longest format raised eyebrows. In the recently ended Ashes, England faced a heartbreaking defeat on Australian soil, and the criticism grew louder.
As the form was already a concern, the recent standoff between coach Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes became a massive issue. Reports indicate that the duo is not on the same page.
According to the Telegraph, McCullum is not fully satisfied with Bern Stokes’ leadership. During the England and Wales Cricket Board’s Ashes review, McCullum reportedly criticized Stokes’ recent Test captaincy, stating that he drifted away from the team’s attacking philosophy.
Stokes not fully convinced by the 'Bazball' approach
As McCullum’s concerns grabbed the attention, Ben Stokes is also not pleased with the coach’s strategy. The England Test skipper has raised doubts over the ‘Bazball’ strategy, admitting it has made him uncomfortable. His concerns carry weight, especially with England’s recent struggles backing his stance.
From 2022 to early 2024, England’s ‘Bazball’ approach earned them success, but the impact started fading away after that. Consecutive failures in the longest format sparked more woes, and the criticism went louder after their humiliating defeat in the Ashes 2025-26.
ECB moves to decide what lies ahead
As the team is already dealing with that issue, the coach-captain standoff is making it worse. With both Stokes and McCullum being stubborn, things became complicated, and the ECB finally came to the rescue. Following the review, several changes were introduced, and McCullum agreed to implement them.
After Stokes also gave a positive nod to the changes, the ECB hoped for a bright future in McCullum-Stokes’s partnership. However, a few key expectations have also been set for Stokes personally. He has been advised to rediscover his form as he prepares to return to the County Championship.
Brendon McCullum has his contract till the end of the 50-over World Cup in 2027, and the ECB is unlikely to terminate him from his post before then.
Despite no major fallout, the strategic differences between Ben Stokes and McCullum have contributed to England’s recent struggles. However, the nation still hopes the Stokes–McCullum partnership can script a strong turnaround.
