BCCI and CA to do an umpire-exchange programme [Source: AFP]
The BCCI and Cricket Australia are conducting a unique umpire exchange programme in the lead-up to the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The initiative comes as domestic seasons in both countries are underway, with the Ranji Trophy and the Sheffield Shield running in parallel currently.
While boards often send players overseas to aid their development in the early stages of their careers, umpire exchange programmes remain relatively rare. The BCCI and Cricket Australia have decided to bring this back into practice in the 2026/27 season.
BCCI and CA confirm umpires for exchange programme
In the development reported by TOI’s Gaurav Gupta, Cricket Australia will fly out Ben Treloar to officiate two Ranji Trophy matches. Trealor’s first match of the assignment is already underway in Delhi, as the hosts take on Gujarat from October 18 to 21.
The Aussie umpire’s second match in charge will be a high-profile game between Mumbai and Haryana from October 26 to 29 in Mumbai.
Trealor is a seasoned Aussie umpire, having officiated 30 FC matches, 20 List A games and 39 BBL clashes. Additionally, he has also taken field for two WODIs and four WT20Is previously. Trealor is also a Umpire Education Officer in New South Wales, as a testament to his abilities.
On the other hand, Prashar Joshi from India, with 19 FC matches, 32 List A matches and 49 T20 games will fly Down Under for two Sheffield Shield matches and one One Day Cup match.
Joshi’s first match will begin on November 11 at the Gabba, when Queensland take on Tasmania. It will be followed by the One Day Cup match between the same teams on November 16, before he wraps up his stint at the Sydney Cricket Ground from November 22 to 25, as the hosts, New South Wales face Queensland.
Previous instances of BCCI-CA umpire exchange programmes
The 2026/27 umpire exchange is not the first time that the two boards are sending out their promising officials for gaining experience in different conditions. Previously, this has happened thrice in recent years. Below are the details of previous instances:
- Mick Martell and Paul Wilson to Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy - 2014/15
- C. Shamshuddin to Sheffield Shield - 2015
- John Ward to Ranji Trophy - 2015
- Greg Davidson to Ranji Trophy - 2020
All the previously involved umpires have vouched for these programmes for their overall development in different conditions.
